Scouting the Tribe
• The Tribe sit at 2-3 on the year with two of its three losses coming to teams currently in the United Soccer Coaches national top 25 (No. 3 North Carolina and No. 16 NC State). W&M's first five opponents are a combined 20-10 on the year.
• Since Labor Day, the Tribe has played just one match, a home win vs. Longwood on Sept. 11, while three contests have been canceled or postponed. W&M's road matches at Loyola (Md.) (Sept. 7) and Maryland (Sept. 17) were canceled due to severe weather, while the Tribe's CAA opener at home against Charleston (Sept. 14) was postponed because of Hurricane Florence. A make-up date between the Tribe and Cougars is still to be determined.
• In its last outing, W&M scored twice over an 88-second stretch in the final five minutes to rally and force overtime, before posting a double overtime 3-2 win over Longwood on Sept. 11. Senior
Antonio Bustamante scored the game-winner in the 109th minute on a free kick.
• Senior
Ryder Bell leads the Tribe, ranks second in the CAA and 35th nationally with four goals on the year. He is second in the CAA with nine points as well. He has notched a point in seven of the last eight matches dating back to last season, including four goals in the Tribe's last four matches.
• Bustamante, who had a goal and an assist vs. Longwood, leads the country in assists per game (1.2), while coming in fourth in the country in total assists (6). He has assisted on six of the Tribe's nine goals this season and registered a helper in all five contests. His six assists are already a career high.
• With a number of players out due to injury, freshmen
James Bradley and
John Eberle as well as junior
Cole Smith received their first career starts in W&M's win over Longwood on Sept. 11. Freshman
Devin McCarthy also made his Tribe debut and tallied an assist against the Lancers.
• Junior
Julian Ngoh posted a point in each of the W&M's first three matches, including goals against both No. 12 North Carolina and Saint Joseph's.
• Bell ranks among the top 15 active NCAA Division I players in goals, assists and points. He is seventh in points (72) and 13th in goals (27) and 15th in assists (18).
• According to
Top Drawer Soccer, the Tribe has three of the top eight players in the CAA. In the website's preseason conference rankings, Bustamante was the top player in the league followed by Bell at No. 3 and senior
Marcel Berry at No. 8.
• Bustamante was one of 32 players named to the Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy Watch List on Aug. 9. He was named a preseason First Team All-American by
Soccer America, Top Drawer Soccer and
College Soccer News. Bustamatne was a consensus All-American in 2017.
• W&M was selected as the preseason favorite to win the CAA for the second-straight year by vote of league coaches on Aug. 16. The Tribe was the unanimous selection, garnering the eight first-place votes from opposing coaches and tallying the maximum number of points with 64.
• Bustamante was named the preseason CAA Player of the Year for the second-straight season. He was joined on the 12-member preseason All-CAA team by Bell and senior
Marcel Berry for the third-straight year.
Scouting Coastal Carolina
- The Chanticleers have won three in a row and sit at 3-1. Coastal Carolina has not played in nearly three weeks since Sept. 2. CCU's last two matches on Sept. 12 vs. Radford and Sept. 16 vs. Mason were postponed or canceled due to Hurricane Florence.
- The program evacuated Conway, S.C., and trained for five days in Orlando hosted by Orlando City FC.
- Coastal Carolina is ranked in all three national polls. CCU is No. 17 in the
Top Drawer Soccer Rankings, No. 24 in the United Soccer Coaches standing and No. 22 by
College Soccer News.
- After dropping its season opener at home to No. 20 UCLA, 4-0, the Chanticleers won three in a row, including a 2-1 double OT win over No. 13 Georgetown. Coastal Carolina won the UAB Soccer for the Cure event as well thanks to a 2-0 win over Memphis and a 1-0 victory at UAB
.
- Junior forward Tsiki Ntsabeleng is CCU's top scorer with six points and two goals and two assists. He has factored in four of the Chanticleers five goals this season and scored the game-winner in the win over No. 13 Georgetown.
- CCU was the preseason favorite to repeat as Sun Belt Champions. Senior Kervin Kenton Fadel, Yazeed Matthews and Saif Alhameli earned preseason All-Sun Belt honors. Fadel, a first team all-league pick last season, was the preseason defensive player of the year.
Series History: W&M vs. Coastal Carolina
- The Tribe leads the all-time series at 3-2-1. The Chanticleers have outscored the Green and Gold, 10-9, in the previous six meetings.
- It marks the fourth-straight year the teams have met, and they have split the previous three meetings, 1-1-1.
- Last season, the teams played to a 1-1 draw in Conway, S.C.
Antonio Bustamante scored the Tribe's lone goal in the 31st minute, before the Chanticleers answered less than a minute later.
- W&M won the last meeting in Williamsburg, 2-1, in 2016.
Ryder Bell scored off a pass from
Marcel Berry in the eighth minute, while
Reeves Trott scored the game-winner in the 65th minute.
Crapolfest X
- The 10th annual Crapolfest is set for Friday and Saturday, Sept. 21-22, in Williamsburg. Celebrating the life of former Tribe player Andy Crapol, the event kicks off as W&M hosts No. 21 Coastal Carolina on Friday night at 7 p.m. and will be followed by a full Saturday of events. Click

- The Andrew E. Crapol Men's Soccer Scholarship has been given out since 2009, and sophomore
Sam Golan is the latest recipient of the scholarship. The previous Tribe players to receive the award include Michael DiNuzzo (2009 and 2010), Nicolas Abrigo (2011), former CAA Defender of the Year Will Smith (2012, 2013 and 2014), and Reilly Maw (2015 and 2016). The Tribe's annual Coach's Award was also renamed the Crapol Award in Andy's honor in 2009 as well.
- Crapol was a four-year letterwinner for the Tribe who lost his battle with cancer during the spring of 2009. An extremely coachable player, the Williamsburg native played in 38 career matches for the Tribe, scoring four goals, including the game-winner against Coastal Carolina during the 1999 season. He graduated from the College in 2001, earning a degree in economics.
- For the first time, Crapolfest concludes with a special 10th anniversary celebration at Berret's Seafood Restaurant & Taphouse Grill on Saturday night at 8 p.m.
Ryder Bell Named Senior CLASS Award Candidate
• Senior
Ryder Bell was one of 30 men's soccer student-athletes from across the country to be named a candidate for the 2018 Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
• An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. The candidate group will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and the winner, by vote of a nationwide panel of media, coaches and fans, will be announced during the 2018 NCAA Men's College Cup in December.
• Bell is a two-time All-CAA selection, including first team honors last season, a two-time United Soccer Coaches All-Region Third Team selection and a three-time Virginia Sports Information Director's All-State Second Team selection. He rnaks among the top 15 among active NCAA Division I players in points, goals and assists.
• An economics major with a minor in marketing, Bell became the 10th W&M men's soccer player to be named a Google Cloud/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American, earning third-team honors in 2017. He was named the 2018 winner of W&M's prestigious Bruce Davidson Memorial Scholarship.
• Within the Williamsburg community, Bell and the W&M soccer program have been heavily involved with Child Development Resources (CDR). CDR strives to inspire and empower children, families and early childhood professionals to reach their full potential, whatever their challenges, and serves approximately 1,200 children and their families each year. He has volunteered with CDR and tutored Math at Hornsby Middle School.
In the Record Books
• With his three points on a goal and an assist vs. Longwood, senior
Antonio Bustamante moved into 10th place on the Tribe's career points list (78) passing Jon Tuttle (1985-88).
• He is only nine points away from ninth place on the list held by Phil Hucles (2000-03) with 87 career points.
• Bustamante scored his 31st career goal against Longwood. He is only two goals shy of the No. 10 spot on that list behind Rob Olsen (1977-80).
• Bustamante ranks third among active NCAA DI players in career points, sixth in goals and 21st in assists (16).
Youth is Served
• Despite returning a veteran lineup, including 16 upperclassmen and eight starters back from 2017, the Tribe's freshman class has made an impact in 2018. Seven Green and Gold rookies have seen action in 2018, including four earning starting nods.
• Freshman goalkeeper
Connor Andrews started each of the first five matches for W&M. He posted a shutout with four saves in the opener against Saint Joseph's. In the Tribe's double OT setback at No. 4 NC State, Andrews made four saves, including a 1-on-1 breakaway in the 10th minute and denying a penalty kick in the 39th minute.
• Redshirt freshman midfielder
Derin Kokuuslu started four of the Tribe's first five matches.
• Freshmen
Devin McCarthy and
John Andrew Eskay registered their first career points and made an impact in the Tribe's 3-2 win over Longwood. McCarthy, who made his first career appearance, assisted on W&M's first goal, and Eskay assisted on the equalizer thanks to a nice run down the left flank.
• Freshmen
John Eberle (five games with one start),
James Bradley (four games with one start) and
Zachary Hosseinian (two appearances) have provided W&M with valuable minutes as well.
