The William & Mary athletics department is saddened to announce the recent passing of former men's track & field and cross country coach Roy Chernock (1928-2018). Chernock coached at W&M from 1977-1990 before retiring to Florida, where he continued to coach a number of high schools in Palm Beach County.
Chernock graduated from NYU in 1950, and began his coaching career at Jamaica High and Oceanside High on Long Island before moving on to the college ranks in 1967. After short tenures at Baruch College, C.W. Post, and Princeton, he came to William & Mary as the head men's cross country and track & field coach in 1977. He led Tribe athletes to nine All-America performances, including a fifth-place finish in the 4x800m relay indoors in 1988. Chernock's teams also won the state championship outdoors in both 1978 and 1984. Chernock was inducted into the W&M Hall of Fame in 2011.
His legacy extended past W&M, as Chernock was also inducted into the Hall of Fame at Oceanside HS, C.W. Post, and NYU. He served as the track coach for the U.S. team at the Maccabiah Games in 1973 and 1977, and coached Team USA in three international meets (vs. the USSR in 1974, England in 1987, and Great Britain in 1993). He remained active throughout his life, setting Master's sprint records in the 100m dash, 200m dash, and the 100m hurdles in his late 60s, and shooting his age (73) in golf.
