Seven All-East Honors Stake W&M Men to First Day Lead at IC4A Championships

The William & Mary men's track & field team picked up seven All-East honors on Saturday at the IC4A Championships, staking the Tribe to the team lead after the first day of events.  W&M scored 36 points, and leads the 34-team event by eight points heading into Sunday.  Princeton and Northeastern are tied for second with 28 points apiece, while Cornell is fourth with 27 points and Navy rounds out the top five with 23 points.

- Leading the way for W&M was redshirt-junior Derek Trott (Old Bridge, N.J.), who both won his first IC4A championship and set a lifetime-best in the javelin to lock up a bid to the NCAA Eastern Semifinals.  In third after the preliminary rounds, Trott took the lead in the fifth round with a throw of 67.02m (219-10), improving his previous career-best by 17 inches and his season-best by more than 13 feet.  His win was the second-ever for W&M in the IC4A javelin, along with the 2011 gold won by Brandon Heroux '12, and improves Trott 26 places on the NCAA East Region list, all the way from 50th up to 24th to extend his season at least one more meet.  At the Eastern Semifinals, Trott will need to place in the top-12 after three throws to advance to the NCAA Finals and earn All-American honors for the first time.

- Also in the throws, grad student Tom Parker (Otford, Kent, England) took second overall in the hammer throw, and set a lifetime-best of his own while doing so.  Parker threw the hammer 65.77m (215-9), adding two inches to the best he set earlier this season, and recorded the fourth-longest throw in school history.  He ranks second all-time among athletes, behind only record-holder Brian Waterfield '15 M.Acc. '16.  Parker currently ranks 19th in the NCAA East Region.

- Freshman Jason Wright (Huntington Station, N.Y.) ended his season on a high note, throwing the hammer 54.42m (178-6) to break the W&M freshman record set earlier this season by his classmate KJ Cook (Buena Vista, Va.).  Wright placed 13th overall in the competition, and moved up to ninth in school history.  Cook was also competing on Saturday, the first of three events for him this weekend, and placed 23rd overall with a throw of 50.45m (165-6).

- On the track, action on a brutally hot day began with the 800m run, where freshman Miles Owens (Yorktown, Va.) ran 1:50.93 for seventh place and All-East honors.  Sophomore Raul Chavez-Gutierrez (Yorktown, Va.), the CAA Champion a week ago, place eighth in 1:51.15 to earn All-East honors as well, and junior Chris Short (Toano, Va.) was 14th overall in 1:51.97.

- Next up was the 1,500m run, where senior Dawson Connell (Yorktown, Va.) finished third overall in 3:46.39.  Junior Ryan McGorty (Fairfax, Va.) ran 3:47.79 for fifth place, and sophomore Cooper Leslie (Camp Hill, Pa.) finished his season with a 3:56.39 for 32nd overall.

- The final event of the day for the Tribe was the 5,000m, and a fourth-place finish for sophomore JP Trojan (Chardon, Ohio).  Trojan battled through the heat to cross the finish in 14:20.87, just a few seconds behind his best, and score five more team points for W&M.

The IC4A Championships continue on Sunday, with W&M competing in the shot put, discus, 400m hurdles, and the 4x400m relay.
