W&M Track & Field Takes Eight Throwers to Penn Relays This Week

The William & Mary track & field teams will send eight throwers up to the Penn Relays this week, in the final appearance before hosting the Colonial Athletic Association Championships next weekend in Williamsburg.  The women's team will have two athletes competing, on Thursday and Friday, while the men's six athletes will compete on Friday and Saturday.  Live results are available through PennRelaysOnline.com

- On Thursday, the Tribe's lone competitor will be senior All-American Leia Mistowski (Narragansett, R.I.), who will compete in the hammer throw championship at 1:15 p.m.  Mistowski is the CAA leader in the hammer, and has not lost to collegiate competition all year so far in her signature event.  She's the school and conference-record holder in the event at 62.03m (203-6), and owns the top-24 throws all-time at W&M and 36 of the top-50 throws in school history.  This will be her fourth appearance at the Penn Relays, after finishing fourth in 2015, third in 2016 (both in the college section), and sixth last season in the championship flight.  Mistowski threw her best of the year last weekend at Duke, 61.69m (202-5) to rank 11th in the NCAA East Region.

- Friday, sophomore Sam Moravsky (Sherman, Conn.) takes the stage in the women's javelin college section at 4:45 p.m.  She's also been having a breakout season, and currently ranks second in the CAA and 48th in the NCAA East Region.  Moravsky opened her year with a lifetime-best 44.34m (145-6) at the Tribe Invitational, and moved up to fourth all-time at W&M in the javelin.  She competed at the Penn Relays last year as well, finishing 18th overall.

- The Tribe men's team begins competition with the college section discus at 9 a.m. on Friday morning.  Freshmen teammates KJ Cook (Buena Vista, Va.) and Connor Scott (Mechanicsville, Va.) will compete, with both men already having qualified for the IC4A Championships.  Cook just broke his own freshman record last week with a throw of 52.60m (172-7), moving up to second all-time at W&M and currently into 39th at the NCAA East Region.  That throw also qualified Cook for the U.S. U20 Championships in June.  Scott, meanwhile, ranks seventh all-time at W&M in the discus with his best of 48.95m (160-7), set two weeks ago at George Mason.

- At 1:15 p.m. on Friday, Cook will be back in action alongside junior Vlad Castillo, Jr. (Belle Mead, N.J.), in the college section shot put.  Cook set a team season-best last weekend at 16.12m (52-10.75) to qualify for the IC4A Championships and move up to 13th in school history outdoors, but Castillo is not far behind at 15.70m (51-6.25) for 16th all-time at W&M.  That puts the junior just five centimeters off of IC4A qualifying for the first time.  If Cook can pop a big mark, he could also be in the running for the only freshman record he doesn't own, the shot put, which is 55-6 (16.91m) set by George Dippold '86, back in March of 1983.

- Saturday, events once again begin at 9 a.m. with the college section javelin.  Redshirt-junior Derek Trott (Old Bridge, N.J.) will represent the Tribe in the event after throwing a season-best and CAA-leading 61.70m (202-5) last weekend at Duke.  He's currently just outside the NCAA selection bubble at 52nd in the East Region, but with a throw anywhere near his best, should lock up his second post-season appearance.  Trott was fifth in this event at the 2016 Penn Relays before missing 2017 due to injury, and ranks fifth all-time at W&M with a best of 66.58m (218-5) from the 2016 CAA Championships.

- At 1:45 p.m. on Saturday, grad student Tom Parker (Otford, Kent, England) will compete in the championship section of the men's hammer throw.  Parker is already the CAA leader in the event, after throwing a lifetime-best 65.71m (215-7) last week at Duke.  That performance also moved him up to second in school history in the event, and was the fourth-longest single throw ever at W&M.  Parker currently ranks 18th in the NCAA East Region, and ninth among British throwers world-wide in 2018.

- The final event of the weekend for W&M will be the college section hammer throw, beginning at 3:15 p.m.  The freshman Cook will be back in action for the third time, and he'll be joined by his classmate Jason Wright (Huntington Station, N.Y.).  Cook set the Tribe's freshman record each of the first four weeks of the season, up to 54.03m (177-3) to rank ninth all-time amon all W&M athletes.  Wright is close behind however, and set his season-best last weekend at Duke with an IC4A-qualifying throw of 53.40m (175-2) to rank 10th in school history.
