Men's Tennis Slays Dragons to Earn Berth in CAA Championship Match

ELON, N.C. – For the third time in the last four years, the William & Mary men's tennis team earned a spot in the Colonial Athletic Association Championship match thanks to a 4-0 win over No. 5 seed Drexel on Saturday morning at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. The Tribe (13-10) used the same doubles combination with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 to take a 1-0 lead, before freshmen Finbar Talcott and Sebastian Quiros and  sophomore Brenden Volk provided singles victories at the bottom three spots to complete the sweep.

For the fourth-straight match, the Tribe used the combination of wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions to claim the opening point of the contest. Volk and freshman Michael Chen tallied a 6-3 win over the Drexel (14-8) pair of Balaji Lakshmanan and Sanil Jagtiani, who entered the match at 13-4, at the No. 2 spot. Senior Christian Cargill and freshman Louis Newman provided the clincher, upending Hamza Laalej and Xandy Hammitt, 6-3, at the third spot. It was the duo's fourth win in a row and the 84th of Cargill's career. He moved into a tie for seventh on the Tribe's career doubles wins list with his head coach Jeff Kader.

Quiros turned in a strong effort at the No. 5 position to push the Tribe advantage to 2-0. The Green and Gold rookie rolled past Bernard Tefel, 6-3, 6-0, and pushed his record to 7-3 on line five.

Just like quarterfinals, Talcott turned in a dominating performance in singles action, this time extending W&M's lead to 3-0 in the semifinals. The Tribe freshman won his team-leading 18th singles match of the season, taking down Sanil Jagtiani, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4.

Volk notched his second clincher in the last two weeks with a victory at the No. 6 spot. The Tribe sophomore won his sixth-straight match and cemented W&M's spot in the title match with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Youssef Lahlou.
