WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary baseball team scored 11 unanswered runs and senior
Ryan Hall knocked his 200
th career hit to take the rubber game against High Point, 13-2, on Sunday afternoon. The Tribe (3-9) smoked a season-high 14 hits and did not surrender an earned run in caging the Panthers (5-6).
The series finale appeared to be shaping into a seesaw affair, before the Tribe broke a 2-all tie with an explosion of eight combined runs in the fifth and seventh inning. After the Panthers pulled even in the fifth, the Tribe answered swiftly in the bottom half of the frame with three runs on four singles, creating a 5-2 margin.
The Green and Gold batted around the order in the bottom of the seventh to reach double-digit runs. After loading the bases on three consecutive walks, freshman
David Hogarth smacked an RBI single to second base. Classmate
Matt McDermott drove in the next run with another walk, before junior
Owen Socher sent an RBI single up the middle. A passed ball scored an unearned run and junior
Zach Pearson pushed a sac fly to center field for a 10-2 lead.
W&M continued to pile up the runs in the eighth inning as well. Junior
Hunter Smith led off with a hit by pitch, sophomore
Patrick Ryan singled to center field and senior
Luca Farina fouled out to right field for the third sac fly. Hogarth platted his second run courtesy of a single to center field, and three at bats later junior
Nick Butts recorded the Tribe's fourth sac fly, this time to left field.
Tribe Standouts
The W&M pitching staff was exceptional as a trio of freshman
Jacob Haney, senior
Michael Toner, and graduate transfer
Andrew Burnick tied a season-low four hits allowed. In his third career start, Haney recorded 2018-best in innings pitched (six), strikeouts (six) and walks (two). The Charlottesville, Va., native conceded just two hits and both of his runs were unearned. Toner hurled two scoreless frames of one-hit ball with three strikeouts, while Burnick fanned a batter and added another goose egg to the scoreboard in the top of the ninth.
A quartet of Tribe players finished the afternoon with multi-hit efforts. Socher led all players with three hits, including a double, and platted a run. Farina tallied two hits and a game-high three RBI, while both McDermott and Hogarth had two hits and two RBI each. Smith also finished 2-for-3 and brought in a run.
