WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – In a matchup highlighted with solid pitching, the William & Mary baseball team was edged by in-state foe Radford, 2-1, on Tuesday afternoon. The Highlanders (4-8) platted the go-ahead run in the eighth to deal the Tribe (3-10) its sixth one-run setback.
W&M pulled even at 1-all in the bottom half of the sixth inning. Rookie
Matt McDermott led off the frame with a double and made it to third due to a bobble by the left fielder. On the next at bat, junior
Nick Butts sent a sacrifice fly to center field for his second RBI in back-to-back games.
However, the Highlanders was able to take back the advantage two innings later. Garrett Matheny singled to center field and advanced on a wild pitch. A Colby Higgerson bunt moved Matheny 90 feet from home plate, before he beat the tag at home during a fielder's choice.
Graduate transfer
Andrew Burnick tossed a scoreless frame in the top of the ninth, but the Tribe was retired in order in the bottom half to cap the game.
