Women's Tennis Welcomes George Washington, #28 Kansas State this Weekend

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The No. 48-ranked William & Mary women's tennis team continues its five-match homestand when it welcomes George Washington and No. 28 Kansas State to Williamsburg this weekend. The Green and Gold hosts the Colonials on Saturday, March 3, at 11 a.m., inside the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center, before taking on the Wildcats on Sunday, March 4, at 10 a.m., at the Millie West Tennis Facility, weather permitting.

Scouting the Tribe
W&M improved to 7-5 on the season with a doubleheader sweep of Georgetown and Richmond by matching 6-1 scores on Feb. 25. The Tribe received its first national ranking of the season on Tuesday, coming in at No. 48 in the Oracle/ITA National Top 50. In the wins over Georgetown and Richmond, senior Ekaterina Stepanova, juniors Lauren Goodman and Clara Tanielian and sophomore Rosie Cheng record a pair of singles victories. The Green and Gold won the doubles point in both matches of the doubleheader as well. Stepanova and Tanielian posted a victory at the No. 1 spot against Georgetown and were named the CAA Doubles Team of the Week as a result on Wednesday. Goodman is a team-best 8-4 in dual-match singles competition and 14-9 overall. Sophomore Natalia Perry, who won at No. 2 singles against UR, is 16-10 in singles action with a 6-4 dual-match ledger, while senior Olivia Thaler is a team-best 17-8 in singles action. Cheng was ranked No. 86 nationally in the latest ITA Singles standings released on Feb. 20. The Green and Gold have played a challenging slate in 2018 with all five losses coming to teams in the national top 25, including contests against No. 1 North Carolina, No. 5 Ilinois, No. 17 Tennessee, No. 20 Kansas and No. 22 Oregon. The Tribe has six remaining matches against ranked foes­, including No. 12 Wake Forest (April 2), No. 24 Virginia (March 29), No. 26 Princeton (March 24), No. 28 Kansas State (March 4), No. 35 Old Dominion (April 13) and No. 50 Rice (March 23).
 
Scouting George Washington
The Colonials enter the weekend at 4-4 on the year and travel to Richmond on Friday, before heading to Williamsburg. George Washington won three of its first four to open the season, including a 5-2 win over CAA foe Delaware. They dropped three straight to West Virginia, Long Beach State and Maryland, before winning its most recent tilt at home against Radford, 5-2. Maria Siopacha, who was an All-Atlantic-10 First Team pick last year, holds down the top singles position for GW and is 11-9 overall with a 5-3 dual-match mark. Like Siopacha, Melis Bayaraktaroglu earned All-Atlantic-10 pick, garnering a spot on the second team in 2017. Julia Herlogsson owns a team-best singles mark at 12-6, including a 7-1 dual-match record at the No. 4 and No. 5 spots.  In doubles, Bayraktaroglu and Siopacha are the Colonials top team, sporting a 3-4 ledger at No. 1.
 
Series History: W&M vs. George Washington
The Tribe is 11-0 all-time against the Colonials, including an 8-0 ledger in Williamsburg. The teams meet for the first time since the 2004 season when the Green and Gold down George Washington, 7-0. 
 
Scouting Kansas State
Kansas State moved up to No 28 in the national rankings on Tuesday following a 4-2 win at No. 49 Missouri last week. The Wildcats are 7-2 on the year with its lone losses to current No. 29 Nebraska, 4-2, and No. 38 FIU, 4-3. KSU also owns victories over Pac-12 opponents Washington State, 4-3, and Colorado, 4-1. Margot Decker is ranked No. 104 nationally in singles and is 4-4 at No. 1 position.  Maria Linares owns a team-best dual-match record at 8-1, playing at the top four positions, and Rosanna Maffei is 6-3 between the No. 2 and No. 3 singles. In doubles, Decker and Carolina Costamagna hold down the top position for K-State and are 6-2 in dual-match play.
 
Series History: W&M vs. Kansas State
The Tribe and Wildcats meet for just the second time on Sunday. Kansas State knocked off W&M, 4-3, in the only other meeting in Cambridge, Mass., during the 2013 campaign.   
 
Up Next
The Tribe faces Ivy-League foe Yale for the seventh time in the last nine years on Friday, March 16. The match carries a 6:30 p.m. start time.
