Men's Tennis Kicks Off Spring Break Hosting Liberty on Saturday

WILLIAMSURG, Va. – The William & Mary men's tennis team opens up the Spring Break portion of the schedule, hosting Liberty on Saturday, March 3, before hitting the road for a three-match trip to the Sunshine State. The Tribe welcomes the Flames to the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center at 3 p.m. During its trip to Florida, W&M will head to FAU on March 6 at 1 p.m., FGCU on March 8 at 5 p.m., and Miami (Fla.) on March 11 at 11 a.m.

Scouting the Tribe
W&M, which earned its highest national ranking since 2008 on Feb. 20 at No. 45, dropped its lone match last week, 4-2, to Ivy League foe Yale. The Green and Gold fell to 6-3 on the year. Senior Alec Miller and freshman Finbar Talcott recorded wins at No. 1 and No. 4, respectively. Miller won his four-straight match and improved his overall singles mark to 11-7. He is a team-best 7-1 in dual-match play, including a 2-0 mark in his last two at No. 1. Talcott posted his 11th singles victory, including a 6-2 dual-match mark. He is 3-0 at the No. 4 spot. Like Talcott, freshman Louis Newman owns a 6-2 dual-match record as well between No. 3 and No. 4. He is 13-6 overall on the year. The Tribe opened the season 5-0 for the first time since 1950. Included in its opening spurt was the program's highest nationally-ranked win since 2007. W&M upended then-No. 25 and current No. 29-ranked South Carolina. Following the win over the Gamecocks, senior Christian Cargill earned his second-straight CAA Player of the Week honor thanks to a nationally-ranked win of his own at the top spot.
 
Scouting Liberty
Liberty enters the weekend at 6-6 following a 5-2 win in its Big South opener over Longwood on Feb. 28. The Flames have won three of their last four, going 2-1 on a trip to Florida. LU topped New Orleans, 7-0, and Florida A&M, 5-1, before dropping a 4-0 decision to No. 16 Florida State. W&M will be Liberty's second CAA foe after the Flames suffered a 6-1 setback at UNCW. The Tribe and LU have one common opponent in Richmond. W&M downed the Spiders, 5-2, while the Flames suffered a 4-3 setback to UR. Sam Matheson is the reigning Big South Player of the Year and is currently 6-4 at the No. 1 singles spot. Eddie Gutierrez leads team with 17-10 overall singles record and 7-4 dual-match mark playing primarily at No. 2 and No. 3. In doubles, Gutierrez and Vince Salas are an impressive 8-1 at No. 2 at 14-6 overall, while Diego Castano and Alex Poynter are 6-5 at the top spot.
 
Series History: W&M vs. Liberty
The Tribe has won all six meetings between the teams and all six have been played in Williamsburg. The in-state opponents square off for the fifth time in the last nine years. W&M downed the Flames, 4-0, in the last meeting in 2015, and Alec Miller clinched the 4-0 win with a triumph at No. 6 singles.
 
Scouting Florida Atlantic
Florida Atlantic sits at 8-5 on the season after having its three-match win streak snapped by UT Arlington, 4-3, on Feb. 25. Prior to the setback, the Owls tallied three-straight wins for the second time this year, downing Georgia Southern (4-0), Stetson (4-0) and Lynn (5-0). FAU also enjoyed a three-match win streak, sweeping its trio of matches at the Army Invitational in January with triumphs over Army (4-0), Santa Clara (4-2) and Yale (4-2). The Owls will host Georgetown and Valparaiso in a doubleheader on March 5, before taking on the Tribe a day later. Remi Chancerel and Jason Legall have both spent time at the top singles position and own dual-match ledgers of 4-4 and 5-5, respectively. Gabriel Sidney owns a team-best 8-1 record in duals playing at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5, while Thomas Bugeaud is 7-2 at the bottom three spots.  Chancerel and Sidney are 5-2 at the No. 1 doubles position.
 
Series History: W&M vs. Florida Atlantic
W&M and FAU meet for the second time. The Tribe downed the then-No. 58 Owls, 5-2, in Boca Raton during the 2003 season.
 
Scouting FGCU
The Eagles are 3-5 on the year following a 4-2 win over UT Arlington on Feb. 23. After dropping its first four matches of the season, including a 4-3 setback to CAA foe UNCW, FGCU has won three of its last four contests. The Tribe and Eagles have a common opponent in ETSU with both suffering losses. FGCU travels to North Florida for its first Atlantic Sun opener on March 2 before hosting W&M on March 8. Felipe Ramirez is the Eagles top player, posting a team-best 11-8 record, including a 4-4 mark at No. 1. FGCU is an impressive 9-4 in dual-match doubles between No. 1 and No. 2.
 
Series History: W&M vs. FGCU
The Tribe meets the Eagles for the first time on March 8. FGCU will be the fourth current Atlantic Sun member that W&M has faced and the first since falling to North Florida in 2013.
 
Scouting Miami (Fla.)
The Hurricanes sit at 6-2 on the season and are riding a five-match win streak. Miami (Fla.) opened the season, dropping two of its first three matches on the road at Tulane, 6-1, and No. 14 Mississippi State, 5-2. The Hurricanes went a perfect 5-0 in February with wins over Georgia Southern (7-0), Iowa (5-2), Florida Atlantic (4-2), Bucknell (7-0) and CAA foe Charleston (7-0). Miami plays three ACC matches before facing the Tribe on March 11 at Georgia Tech (March 2), at Clemson (March 4) and home against Florida State (March 9). As a team, the Hurricanes are 31-13 in dual-match singles action. Christian Langmo is 5-2 at No. 1, while Niclas Genovese (No. 5) and Adria Soriano (No. 2 and No. 3) lead the Hurricanes with a 6-1 dual-match singles ledger. Langmo and Dane Dunlap are a team-best 7-1 in dual-match doubles, while Pablo Aycart and Nile Clark own a 4-1 record at No. 2 doubles.
 
Series History: W&M vs. Miami (Fla.)
The Green and Gold takes on Miami (Fla.) for the first time on March 11. The Hurricanes are the first ACC opponent for the Tribe this season. Last season, W&M split its matches with the ACC, including a 5-2 win at Boston College.
 
Up Next
The Tribe returns to action when its hosts its second CAA opponent of the year in James Madison on Saturday, March 17, before welcoming Troy to Williamsburg on Sunday, March 18. The W&M-JMU match-up is set for a 1 p.m., start, while the Tribe and Trojans face off at 11 a.m. Both matches will be played outdoors at the Millie West Tennis Facility, weather permitting.
