Men's Tennis Blanks CAA Foe James Madison, 7-0

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary men's tennis team remained undefeated in Colonial Athletic Association play, blanking instate rival James Madison, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. The Green and Gold (8-6) set itself up to potentially be the top seed in the league championship thanks its 2-0 CAA ledger. Seniors Alec Miller and Christian Cargill as well as freshmen Louis Newman and Michael Chen highlighted the Tribe effort with wins in both singles and doubles against the Dukes (12-3, 2-1 CAA).

The Tribe swept doubles to take the initial point of the match. At the top spot, junior Tristan Bautil and Miller raced out to a 5-0 lead on the way to a dominating 6-1 win over Theophile Lanthiez and Paul Mendoza. The JMU duo won the CAA Doubles Team of the Week honor on Tuesday and was 10-4 at No. 1.

Sophomore Brenden Volk and Chen won the final four games at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point with a 6-2 win over Gonzalo Adis and Tate Steinour.  Cargill and Newman rounded out the doubles sweep with their third-straight win on the two line, downing Alvaro Arce and Pierre Kohler, 6-3.

Chen wasted little time increasing the Tribe lead to 2-0 with his first career dual-match singles victory. The Tribe rookie won four of the final five games of the first set for a 6-4 triumph, before topping Adis, 6-2, in the second.

Cargill pushed the Green and Gold margin to 3-0 with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Alvaro Arce at No. 2. His doubles teammate, Newman, cemented the Tribe victory for the third time this season. He bounced 2017 CAA Rookie of the Year Damon Roberts, 7-6, 7-5, at No. 3.

Miller and freshmen Finbar Talcott and Sebastian Quiros rounded out the Tribe sweep with three-set wins at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5. After dropping a first-set tiebreaker to Mendoza, Miller rallied to win the match taking the second, 6-3, and the third-set super breaker, 10-5.

Talcott and Quiros both claimed opening sets from Kohler and Lanthiez, respectively, on lines four and five, before the JMU players answered with triumphs in the second. The Tribe rookies both pulled out 7-5 victories in the third to finalize the sweep.
