WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Different opponent, same story for the William & Mary men's tennis team, and on Charter Day, it involved the program's highest nationally-ranked win in 11 years. The Tribe used its singles dominance, winning four of the six matches, including a nationally-ranked win for senior
Christian Cargill, to upset No. 25-ranked South Carolina, 4-3, at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. The Green and Gold ran its season-opening win streak to five matches, the longest since 1950. Along with Cargill, the Tribe's freshman class once again came up big thanks to singles wins from
Louis Newman,
Finbar Talcott and
Sebastian Quiros.
Quiros and Newman displayed poise beyond their years, answering Gamecock wins to keep W&M even the its nationally-ranked SEC counterpart. Quiros won his third straight, dropping just two games in a convicting 6-1, 6-1 triumph over USC's Thomas Brown at No. 6. Newman stayed unbeaten in dual-match play at 5-0 thanks to a 6-3, 6-3 win over previously nationally-ranked Thomas Mayronne at No. 4. The South Carolina senior was ranked as high as No. 84 nationally this season.
Following a Gamecock victory at No. 3, Cargill turned in the strongest performance of his senior campaign, upending No. 109-ranked Gabriel Friedrich, 7-6, 6-4. It was Cargill's fifth career nationally-ranked win, while Friedrich, a two-time All-SEC pick, was ranked as high as No. 28 earlier this season and has competed in the NCAA Singles Championship each of the last two years.
For the second time this season, the balance of the match came down to Talcott at the No. 5 position. USC's Wood Benton claimed the opening set in a tiebreaker, but the Tribe rookie found the answer. He ripped off back-to-back sets of 6-2, 6-2 to clinch the program's highest-ranked win since 2007.
