W&M News and Notes
• While Hofstra leads the all-time series at 19-13, the Tribe has won six of the last 10 meetings, including two of the last three in Hempstead. The games have been close recently with four of the last eight contests being decided by a single possession, including two OT buzzer-beating wins for W&M.
• The Tribe ranks 24th nationally with seven road wins. The seven road wins are sixth in W&M history, and it marks the 11th time the Tribe has won seven or more road games in a season. Four of those seasons have come under head coach
Tony Shaver, including three of the last five years. W&M is 5-2 in CAA road games this season.
• With its nine CAA wins, W&M is one away from hitting double-digits for the fifth-straight season. It would be a first in program history. The Tribe owns six seasons with 10 or more CAA wins under head coach
Tony Shaver. Prior to his arrival in Williamsburg, the Green and Gold had just one such CAA season. W&M would become the sixth CAA program on the eighth occasion to produce five-straight seasons of 10 or more CAA wins.
• Over the last five years, the Tribe is the winningest program in the CAA in terms of league wins (52) and overall winning percentage (61.2). W&M's 93 wins over the last five years are just one behind Towson's league-leading 94. The Tigers have played nine more games than the Tribe during that stretch.
• The Tribe is the best shooting team in the country, as the only program to rank among the top 10 nationally at all three levels. W&M leads the country in both 3-point percentage (44.0) and free throw shooting (80.0), while ranking sixth in field goal percentage (50.8). No team in NCAA history has shot 50 percent from the field, 40 percent from 3-point range and 80 percent from the free throw line in the same season, and only three have shot 50-40-75.
• Over the last six games, sophomore
Justin Pierce is averaging 22.8 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. He poured in a career-high 33 points, the second most by a Tribe sophomore in school history, vs. Delaware on Feb. 10 after posting a 30-point,12-rebound double-double vs. Elon on Feb. 1. Pierce tallied 27 points with 14 rebounds at Towson on Jan. 25. Pierce ranks among the CAA leaders in 10 different categories. He is third in the league and 53rd nationally in rebounding (8.8).
• For the sixth-straight season and 10th time in the last 11 years, the Tribe topped the 400-assist mark. W&M has 448 assists in 2017-18 and is looking for its third-straight 500-assist campaign. The Tribe's assists total ranks seventh in school history. W&M is seventh nationally at 17.9 assists per game, which would top last year's school record mark of 17.5.
• Sophomore
Nathan Knight was named to the Lou Henson Award Mid-Season Watch list, which annually recognizes the nation's top Division I mid-major player. He ranks fifth in the CAA and 91st nationally at 18.4 points per game to go along with 7.5 rebounds. Knight, who is a two-time CAA Player of the Week, ranks 65th nationally with eight double-doubles, including three of the 30-point, 10-rebound variety. He is 41st in the country shooting 56.9 percent from the floor.
• According to advanced statistical website KenPom.com, the Tribe ranks fourth nationally in effective field goal percentage (59.0) and 41st in adjusted offensive efficiency (115.0). W&M has been in the top 60 in adjusted offensive efficiency each of the previous four seasons with a high of No. 31 in 2015. W&M has ranked among the top 25 in effective field goal percentage each of the last six seasons, including as high as No. 6 in both 2013-14 and 2014-15.
• Senior guard
David Cohn leads the CAA and ranks 12th nationally at 6.7 assists per game. His 2017-18 assists total of 167 is second on the Tribe's single-season list and only one off Scott Coval's school-record mark of 168 set in 1985. With his nine assists at UNCW on Jan. 27, Cohn became W&M's all-time leader in career assists, surpassing the previous mark of 409 held by Coval (1983-86). Cohn ranks 23rd among active DI players in career assists with 479 after playing his freshman season at Colorado State.
• Senior
Connor Burchfield is the top 3-point shooter in country both this season and over his career. He currently leads the nation at 52.5 percent from long range, while ranking 32nd in 3-pointers made (3.0). Burchfield is the active NCAA Division I career leader at 50.8 percent from 3-point range. His 164 career 3-pointers rank ninth in Tribe history, while his 74 triples this season are sixth in program lore.
• W&M connected on double-digit 3-pointers in six of the last seven games and is 11-3 this season when accomplishing the feat. W&M has hit 15 or more 3-pointers in game on eight occasions in 2017-18. Prior to 2017-18, the Tribe hit the mark nine times and 15 of W&M's 17 occasions have come under head coach
