The William & Mary men's swimming team picked up points in all seven events on Saturday night at the TYR Invitational, and heads into the final day in second place of the six team event. The Tribe has 434 points, behind only host Northwestern with 785, while Michigan State is third with 411.5 points.
200 Medley Relay
- In the 200 medley relay, W&M finished second overall in 1:30.54, the 13th-fastest race in school history. Junior
Colin Demers (Virginia Beach, Va.) led the team off, before
Brooks Peterson (Carrollton, Va.),
Jack Doherty (Wilton, Conn.), and
Colin Wright (Williamsburg, Va.) finished the race.
- The Tribe also got an 11th-place finish from the team of
Jack Galbraith (Vienna, Va.),
Ian Cobb (Vienna, Va.),
Joey Rento (Newport News, Va.), and
Ramzy Ali (Thalwil, Switzerland). The quartet combined to finish in 1:34.65.
400 IM
- Juniors
Chris Balbo (Short Hills, N.J.) and
Ben Skopic (Marriottsville, Md.) both found their way to the podium of the 400 IM, with Balbo swimming 3:55.92 for second place and Skopic finishing right behind him in 3:56.05 for third.
- Also in the championship final was freshman
Steven Thalblum (Ashburn, Va.), who swam a personal-best 3:58.94 for fourth overall, and to rank 13th in school history.
- Senior
Carter Kale (Williamsburg, Va.) rounded out the championship heat in 4:03.77 for eighth place, and
Jake Kealy (Wilton, Conn.) was ninth, winning the consolation finals in 4:00.00. Freshman
Kade Younger (Newport News, Va.) was 15th in the consolation finals, finishing in 4:09.94.
- The junior Bidwell was the top finished in the bonus finals, timing 4:05.77 for 17th overall, and sophomore
James Mostofi (Darien, Conn.) was not far behind in 4:08.37 for 19th overall. Freshman
Ryan Bebel (Westfield, N.J.) and junior
Philip Barto (Midlothian, Va.) took 21st and 23rd, respectively.
100 Fly
- Doherty came back in the 100 fly for a seventh-place finish, timing 50.45 seconds.
- Wright, Rento, and Thompson all scored in the consolation finals, with Wright leading the way in 50.33 for 12th overall. Rento took 14th in 50.60, and Thompson was 16th in 50.92.
- Redshirt-senior
Evan Baker (Chantilly, Va.) won the bonus finals with a time of 50.45, and Galbraith was 20th overall in 51.14.
200 Free
- Due to scratches, sophomore
Christopher Pfuhl (Charlotte, N.C.) was moved up into the championship heat and he made the most of the opportunity, swimming 1:41.39 for seventh overall.
- Senior
Eric Grimes (Louisville, Ky.) finished 11th in the consolation finals with a time of 1:42.50, and was joined there by junior
Lee Bradley (Crestwood, Ky.), who finished 16th in 1:44.59.
- Sophomore
Aristides Speres (Rye, N.H.) was moved into the bonus heat, and finished 20th overall in 1:44.32.
100 Breast
- The senior Peterson scored 11 more points for the Tribe in the 100 breast, finishing eighth overall in 58.33 seconds.
- In the consolation heat, Bidwell made a big move from this morning and swam 56.75 seconds to finish in 10th place.
- The freshman Cobb also swam in the consolation finals, taking 14th in 57.85 seconds, and his classmate Bebel won the bonus finals in 59.14 seconds for 17th overall.
100 Back
- The Tribe had three more scorers in the consolation finals of the 100 back, led by Kealy who finished 14th in 51.77 seconds. Demers was right behind him 51.97 seconds for 15th and Bradley took 16th, stopping the clock in 52.42 seconds.
- In the bonus finals, Thompson gave the Tribe another heat win, touching the final wall in 50.85 seconds and taking 17th overall. Galbraith also swam in the 100 back, taking 24th overall in 52.57 seconds.
800 Free Relay
- The final event of the day was the 800 free relay, where the team of Wright, Thalblum, Pfuhl and Skopic combined to take fifth overall. The quartet swam 6:47.32, the 15th-fastest race in school history.
- W&M also took sixth in 6:53.11, thanks to the efforts of the team that included Kale, Speres, Balbo, and Grimes.
The TYR Invitational wraps up on Sunday, with prelims at 9 a.m. Central/10 a.m. Eastern, and finals beginning at 4 p.m. Central/5 p.m. Eastern. Events on the final day include the 1,650 free, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 back, 200 fly, the 100 IM, platform diving, 50 fly, and the 400 free relay.
