Men's Tennis Welcomes Elon and Penn to Williamsburg this Weekend

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary men's tennis continues its season-opening five-match homestand with a Colonial Athletic Association semifinal rematch against Elon followed by a tilt vs. an Ivy League counterpart in Penn. The Tribe welcomes the Phoenix on Friday night, Jan. 26, at 5 p.m., before hosting the Quakers on Saturday night, Jan. 27, at 7 p.m. Both matches will be played at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
 
New to Tribe tennis in 2018, fans can watch the all action at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center via PlaySight. Scouting the Tribe
W&M opened the 2018 campaign with a 4-3 win over two-time defending MAAC Champion Monmouth on Jan. 14. After the Tribe dropped the doubles point, the Green and Gold won four singles matches, including three by freshmen to pick up the win. Senior Lars de Boer posted his 50th career singles win with a victory at the No. 2 spot. Freshmen Louis Newman (No. 3), Finbar Talcott (No. 4) and Sebastian Quiros (No. 6) each recorded their first career dual-match singles wins against the Hawks. Newman's victory was the clincher. Senior Christian Cargill leads the Tribe with a 9-6 singles record and is closely followed by Newman at 8-4. In doubles, Newman is a team-best 9-4, including a 6-2 ledger with Cargill. Against Monmouth, Cargill posted his 75th career doubles victory, which ranks 10th on the Tribe's career list. He and Newman picked up a win at the No. 2 post, before the Hawks responded with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. 
 
Scouting Elon
The Phoenix opened the 2018 season with a doubleheader sweep of N.C. A&T, 7-0, and N.C. Wesleyan, 6-1, at home. Elon stepped up in competition over its last two matches, suffering losses to No. 20 South Carolina, 6-1, and No. 1 Wake Forest, 7-0. Last season, the Phoenix compiled a 12-12 record. Junior Felipe Sarrasague is Elon's top returning player as a two-time First Team All-CAA honoree. Junior Mario Paccini is a two-time all-league pick as well, including first-team distinction in 2016. Junior Salvador Mijares is returning All-CAA pick as well, earning second-team honors last season.
 
Series History: W&M vs. Elon
The Tribe leads the all-time series with the Phoenix at 4-2. It marks the fourth-straight season in which W&M and Elon have met. In 2017, the teams split meetings. The Phoenix posted a 5-2 win over the Tribe at home, before the Green and Gold responded with a 4-1 win in the CAA Semifinals at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. W&M won the doubles points, before receiving wins from Aidan Talcott (No. 1), Alec Miller (No. 4) and Lars de Boer (No. 6) in singles to dispatch of the Phoenix. The Tribe also defeated the Phoenix in the 2015 CAA Semifinals in Williamsburg.
 
Scouting Penn
The Quakers dropped their opener at Old Dominion, 4-3, on Jan. 21. Penn posted a trio of singles wins thanks to triumphs at No. 1 by Kyle Mautner, at No. 3 by Dmitry Shatalin and at No. 6 by Noah Makarome. Mautner (6-3), Josh Pompan (6-4) and Shatalin (6-3) lead Penn in singles wins with six and played at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 posts, respectively, against Old Dominion. Last season, the Quakers went 14-12 and finished with a 6-5 record on the road. Mautner is a two-time returning First Team All-Ivy League selection, while Pompan was a second team all-league pick last season.
 
Series History: W&M vs. Penn
W&M and Penn square off for the fourth-straight season. The series is all tied at three apiece following the Quakers 6-1 win over the Green and Gold in Philadelphia last season. In 2016, the Tribe claimed a 5-2 victory in singles in Williamsburg. Christian Cargill (No. 1) and Lars de Boer (No. 4) both posted singles wins as part of the triumph.
