WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary men's tennis team opens the dual-match campaign at home for the first time since 2014 when it welcomes two-time defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Champion Monmouth on Sunday, Jan. 14. The match carries an 11 a.m., start time at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
New to Tribe tennis in 2018, fans can watch the all action at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center via PlaySight. Scouting the Tribe
The Tribe won 11 matches a season ago and advanced to the CAA Championship match with victories over Drexel and Elon. The Green and Gold is led by its three-member senior class of
Christian Cargill,
Lars de Boer and
Alec Miller. The trio owns 149 career singles wins, including 105 in dual-match play, and 139 doubles victories. All three have been fixtures in the W&M lineup throughout their careers and helped the program to a CAA Championship in 2015. Along with its five returning players, the Tribe welcomes a four-member freshman class that was ranked among the top-25 mid-major classes in the country. The group includes a pair of top-60 ranked players by the Tennis Recruiting Network (
Finbar Talcott and
Michael Chen), a Costa Rican Davis Cup player (
Sebastian Quiros) and an English National Champion (
Louis Newman).
Scouting Monmouth
The Hawks have won back-to-back Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships. Monmouth compiled a 13-12 mark last season, including a 6-0 ledger in MAAC play. They were 6-12 away from home in 2017. Last season, the Hawks faced a pair of CAA opponents, knocking off Hofstra, 6-1, while falling to Elon, 4-1. Monmouth returns four players that earned All-MAAC players from a season ago. The Hawks swept the top three doubles positions in 2017, while senior Ale Gomez Estrada and junior Alberto Giuffrida are both two-time All-MAAC singles picks. In his two seasons, Alex Kasarov has led Monmouth to the NCAA Tournament and was the MAAC Coach of the Year last season.

Sunday is the first meeting between the Tribe and Hawks. W&M is 2-0 against current members of the MAAC with both victories over Iona.
Tribe News and Notes
• The Tribe has won its season opener in nine of the last 10 years. The Green and Gold has won 10-straight home openers, dating back to 2008.
• Monmouth is the first of six conference champions that the Tribe is slated for face in 2018. In total, the Green and Gold meets seven teams that participated in the 2017 NCAA Tournament and 14 regionally-ranked foes, including two in the national top 30, from a season ago. W&M's 2018 opponents averaged over 15 wins last season and racked up a winning percentage of 61.5.
• Senior
Christian Cargill led the Tribe with a 9-5 singles ledger during the fall season. The three-time All-CAA singles pick advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA Atlantic Region Singles Championship.
• Cargill, a two-time All-CAA doubles selection, ranks among the Tribe's career leaders in doubles victories and win percentage. He ranks seventh in program history in double winning percentage (.661), while coming in 10th in doubles wins (74). He is four wins away from ninth on the wins list.
• At the Monarch Invitational, junior
Tristan Bautil and freshman
Michael Chen teamed to win the Navy Doubles Draw at the Monarch Invitational during the fall. The duo won a trio of matches, including a tiebreaker victory over the top-seeded ODU pair of Aziz Kijametovic and Jannik Giesse. They upended their senior teammates
Lars de Boer and
Alec Miller, 8-4, in the championship.

The Tribe continues its season-opening five-match homestand with tilts against CAA foe Elon and Ivy League counterpart Penn on Friday, Jan. 26, and Saturday, Jan. 27, respectively. W&M meets the Phoenix on Friday at 5 p.m., before welcoming Penn on Saturday at 7 p.m. Both matches will be played at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center and will be live streamed via PlaySight.
