The William & Mary field hockey team continues its season-long four game road swing this weekend, heading up to Ann Arbor, Mich., for the Wolverine Classic. The Tribe will take on host and No. 7-ranked Michigan on Friday night at 6 p.m., and then face UC Davis on Saturday at 4 p.m. Live stats for both matches will be available through TribeAthletics.com and MGoBlue.com.
Scouting the Tribe
W&M went 2-0 last week to improve to 3-1 on the year, beating 2016 MAAC Champion Monmouth 2-1 and blanking Columbia 3-0. Senior
Cammie Lloyd (Midlothian, Va.) scored twice against the Lions to take over the team lead with seven points (3g, 1a), while sophomore
Woodard Hooper (Reston, Va.) has two goals on the year, both of them game-winners. In goal, sophomore
Morgan Connor (Bedford, N.Y.) has improved her numbers to a 1.75 GAA and 20 saves, coming on a .741 save percentage.
Scouting the Wolverines
Michigan ascended to No. 7 in the national polls this week, after going 3-1 over the first two weeks. The Wolverines opened with three straight wins, including 3-2 over No. 1 North Carolina, 5-4 over No. 15 Wake Forest, and 3-0 against No. 25 Liberty, before falling 2-1 to No. 4 Connecticut on Sunday. Meg Dowthwaite is the leading scorer with five goals and an assist, while in goal, Sam Swenson has a 2.00 GAA and 22 saves on a .733 save percentage.
Scouting the Aggies
UC Davis is a tough 0-4 to start the year and playing on the road for the first time. After opening with 2-1 loss to Michigan State, the Aggies have been blanked by No. 5 Syracuse, No. 20 Harvard (both 3-0), and No. 17 Iowa (4-0) in their last three games. Madison Cohen has the team's lone goal so far, while Chelsea Bigelow has a 3.02 GAA and a .714 save percentage (30 saves) in goal.
The Series
- Michigan leads the series with W&M 5-1, including a 2-0 win in Ann Arbor back in 2014. The Tribe's win was 3-2 in the 1992 season, with close matches the norm. In the six matches so far, three have been won by a goal (including Michigan's 3-2 double-overtime win in the 2000 NCAA Tournament), and three by just two goals.
- The Tribe won the only previous meeting with UC Davis 3-1, back in 2011. Like this year, that match was a neutral-site meeting as part of a tournament (then in Oxford, Ohio).
News and Notes
- Senior captain
Erin Menges (Richmond, Va.) is one of 12 players currently tied for the national lead with two defensive saves on the year. Among the other 11 players are three future Tribe opponents - Young of UC Davis, Hall of James Madison, and O'Grady of La Salle.
- With both UC Davis and Pacific on the schedule, this the first year since 1985 that W&M will play multiple West Coast teams in the same year. Back then, it was San Jose State (who no longer has a team) and Stanford who had the honors. Currently, there are only four West Coast field hockey teams in the NCAA - UC Davis, Pacific, Stanford, and California.
-
Erin Menges had both of her defensive saves against No. 2 Duke, marking the third multi-save game of her career. Since the 2000 season, only All-American
Anna Davis '06 has more such games (four). Menges is now tied for 11th all-time at W&M, with eight defensive saves.
- W&M was picked to finish third in the CAA pre-season poll, behind defending NCAA Champion Delaware and James Madison. The Tribe lost to Delaware 3-2 in overtime in 2016, and beat the Dukes 4-3 in overtime in the regular season before falling in the conference semifinals, 2-0.
- Tribe players had an outstanding summer on the Team USA circuit, with six players being invited to the YWNC, and five of those earning an invitation onwards to the Team USA selection camps.
Erin Menges was named to the National Developmental Squad, while
Christie van de Kamp (Midlothian, Va.) was chosen for the U21 National Team and
Annie Snead (Midlothian, Va.) was named an alternate to the U21 team as well.
- At the conclusion of spring training, the team selected
Erin Menges and
Katelyn Rennyson (Centreville, Va.) as team captains.
- W&M returns every all-conference honoree from a year ago, including
Erin Menges who was the CAA Defensive Player of the Year and second-team All-CAA, all-region, and all-state. Also back is
Cammie Lloyd, a first-team All-CAA and all-state choice at forward, as well as
Booter Ellis (Delmar, Del.), who joined Menges on the all-region, all-state, and all-conference second teams.
Estelle Hughes (Newcastle, NSW) was also a member of the All-CAA and all-state second teams, while
Annie Snead,
Cassidy Goodwin (Gloucester, Va.), and
Morgan Connor were all named to the CAA All-Rookie team.
- Eight of the Tribe's 18 regular season opponents begin the year in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Pre-Season Top-25. In addition to No. 2 Duke, future opponents include No. 3 Delaware, No. 10 Virginia, No. 11 Michigan, No. 12 Boston College, No. 19 James Madison, No. 23 Old Dominion, and No. 25 Pacific. Additionally, the Tribe scrimmaged against No. 25 Liberty during camp.
- At the end of the 2016 season, W&M ranked sixth nationally with 12 defensive saves. In the individual rankings,
Cammie Lloyd was 23rd overall with 0.79 goals per game and 25th with 1.89 points per game, while
Erin Menges was 10th in the nation with five defensive saves.
