WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — William & Mary field hockey head coach Tess Ellis earned her 100th career victory as the Tribe picked up its first win of the season with a 5-2 victory over Longwood in its home opener Friday at Busch Field.
The milestone victory featured plenty of firsts for the Green and Gold, as freshmen Hayden Haynes, Hailey Haynes and Emilia Rubel each scored their first career goals, while graduate transfer Kate Longo found the back of the cage for the first time as a member of the Tribe.
Josie Mae Gruendel rounded out W&M's five different goal scorers in the victory. Rubel added an assist to finish with a team-high three points.
W&M (1-1) grabbed the lead in the 13th minute when Hayden Haynes opened her collegiate scoring account. Ava Rossman picked up the assist on the goal at the 12:27 mark.
The Tribe doubled its advantage less than eight minutes into the second quarter. Gruendel found the cage at 22:13 to send the Green and Gold into halftime with a 2-0 advantage.
Hailey Haynes joined her twin sister in the scoring column in the third quarter, extending the lead to 3-0 in the 39th minute. Rubel provided the assist for her first career point.
Longwood broke through early in the fourth quarter on a goal from Caitlin Carraway, cutting the W&M lead to 3-1.
The Tribe responded with two goals in less than four minutes. Rubel scored her first career goal off an assist from Samantha Daly at 49:47 before Longo made it 5-1 with her first goal in Green and Gold at 53:18. Arden Mankovich picked up the assist on Longo's tally.
The Lancers added the game's final goal in the 56th minute.
W&M finished with a 16-9 advantage in shots, including an 8-3 edge during the fourth quarter, and held an 8-5 advantage in penalty corners.
Alexandra de Jesus played the opening 49:48 in goal and made one save while allowing one goal. Emma Cari played the final 10:12.
