WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — William & Mary fell to VCU 4-2 in non-conference action on Busch Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Tribe (1-2) matched the Rams (2-1) with nine shots and put seven on goal, but a four-goal second quarter lifted the visitors to the win.
Josie Mae Gruendel put the Tribe in front in the opening quarter with the match's first goal at 4:02.
Alexandra de Jesus preserved that margin with a save on Manuela Secondo's shot, and W&M added a penalty corner from
Kate Longo before ending the frame ahead 1-0.
The Tribe conceded four Rams goals in the second quarter, including three goals in a 90-second span that gave VCU a 4-1 lead. The Green and Gold still generated pressure with five penalty corners and six shots in the quarter, including late saved attempts from
Sam Daly,
Ava Rossman and
Lily Johnson in the final 1:03.
W&M kept the Rams off the scoreboard in a scoreless third quarter but could not add to its own total. Longo had a penalty corner at 36:50 but it was thwarted by the Rams to keep the deficit at 4-1.
Callia Uviedo scored for the Tribe off Longo's penalty corner at 53:27, her first goal of the season. Despite a furious late rally, W&M was unable to find the back of the goal as VCU secured the win on Senior Day.
