Aidan Talcott Headlines League Awards as CAA Player of the Year

RICHMOND, Va. – William & Mary senior Aidan Talcott capped off a memorable 2017 campaign by being named the Colonial Athletic Association Men's Tennis Player of the Year, headlining the league's awards. Along with Talcott, senior Ryan Newman and junior Christian Cargill garnered All-CAA First Team honors in doubles. Cargill was a second team all-league pick in singles, his third-straight All-CAA singles accolade, and junior Lars de Boer was named to the CAA All-Academic Team.

Talcott became the sixth Tribe player and first since Trevor Spracklin in 1999 to earn the CAA Player of the Year award. He joined a group that also includes Will Harvie (1986 and 1987), Scott Mackesy (1990 and 1991), Vasko Kohlmayer (1993), and Scott Lindsey (1994). He was also named to the All-CAA First Team in singles.

Talcott, who was ranked as high as No. 72 nationally during the spring, led W&M with the 17-10 singles record, including an impressive 13-7 mark at No. 1. He won seven of its final eight matches, including dominating the competition at the CAA Championship. He won all three of his matches at the top spot and only dropped five total games in the process on the way to being named the Most Outstanding Performer of the CAA Championship. Talcott finished his W&M career ranked ninth in school history in singles winning percentage at 64.3 (36-20).

Newman and Cargill received First Team All-CAA honors in doubles after going 3-0 at the No. 1 position, including a perfect 2-0 at the CAA Tournament. It marked the second-straight season in which Cargill received All-CAA doubles honors after he was a second team pick with Scott Huang in 2016. The accolade was the first of Newman's career. Cargill led W&M with 18 doubles wins on the year, while Newman was second on the team with 16, including a team-high eight at No. 1. Through his first three seasons, Cargill owns 68 doubles wins, which is just outside the program's all-time top 10, to go along with the third-best doubles winning percentage in school history at 68 percent.

For the third year in a row, Cargill earned All-CAA honors in singles, gaining a spot on the second team. He was a First Team All-CAA selection in each of his first two seasons. Cargill won seven of his final eight matches and finished the year with 15 wins, including a 13-6 ledger at No. 2.

de Boer was named to the CAA All-Academic Team for his work in the classroom and on the court. A finance major, he is a three-time W&M Provost Award winner and was selected as an ITA Scholar-Athlete in 2015. This season, de Boer won 11 singles matches, including eight in dual-match play, and posted nine total doubles victories.

Joining Talcott on the All-CAA First Team for singles were Charleston's Juan Estevarena and Benedidt Henning, UNCW's Agustin Savarino and Andres Torres and Elon's Felipe Sarrasague. The other two teams on the All-CAA First Team in doubles were Charleston's Rodrigo Encinas and Estevarena as well as Elon's Chris Humphreys and Petar Tomic. The All-CAA Second Team in singles included Elon's Salvador Mijares and Mario Paccini, Ignasi de Rueda of UNCW, Drexel's Hamza Laalej and Damon Roberts of James Madison. Four teams comprised the All-CAA Second Team for doubles with Elon's Salvador Mijares and Neal Port and JMU's Theophile Lanthiez and Paul Mendoza earning honors. A pair of UNCW duos rounded out the second team with Ignasi de Rueda and Agustin Savarino as well as Andres Torres and Michael Morphy receiving nods. UNCW's Mait DuBois was the CAA Coach of the Year, while the Seahawks' Ignasi de Rueda and Damon Roberts of James Madison shared the rookie of the year distinction.
