Men's Basketball Travels to Drexel Thursday Night

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William & Mary men's basketball team travels to the City of Brotherly Love to take on the Drexel Dragons Thursday night. It will be the second meetings between the teams in the last 11 days following the Tribe's 108-85 win over Drexel in Williamsburg on Jan. 30. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m., and the contest will broadcast online at CAA.TV.

Tribe fans can also catch the men's basketball action over the Tribe Radio Network with Jay Colley and former Tribe player John Leone on the call. The Tide 92.3 FM and 107.9 Bach FM are the flagship stations of the Tribe Radio Network and the audio is also available over the Web at TribeAthletics.com.

News and Notes
- Drexel leads the all-time series with the Tribe at 21-14, but W&M has won 12 of the last 20 meetings, including the first meeting this season in Williamsbug, 108-85, on Jan. 30. The Tribe has won five of the last seven meetings, including the last three in Philadelphia.
- W&M and Drexel face off for the second time in the last 11 days. They are the top two tempo teams in the CAA according to KenPom.com. Drexel is 60th nationally at followed by the Tribe at No. 62. Both teams average 71.2 possession per 40 minutes. W&M and Drexel both rank among the top five in the CAA at more than 75 points per game.
- The Green and Gold surpassed the 400 assist mark for the fifth-straight year and ninth time in the last 10 seasons on Saturday. The Tribe has dished out 20 or more assists in a four of the last five games and ranks ninth nationally at 17.6 per contest.
- Senior Daniel Dixon earned CAA Player of the Week honors for the second time. It marked back-to-back Players of the Week for W&M after Omar Prewitt received the distinction on Jan. 30. Dixon averaged 27.7 points, 5.7 rebounds and three assists per game last week. He has scored 20 or more points in each of the last five games and leads the CAA at 22.5 points per game in league action.
- The Tribe offense has been clicking of late, scoring 80 or more points in five straight games. The Green and Gold leads the CAA in field goal (49.0) and 3-point percentage (39.3). W&M ranks among the top 30 nationally in those categories as well as scoring (81.6) and 3-pointers made per game (9.4).
 
Scouting Drexel
- The Dragons enters the contest with W&M at 8-17 overall and have dropped 11 their last 13 games. Drexel is 2-10 in CAA after dropping a pair of heartbreaking games last week. The Dragons fell in double OT at Towson, 104-103, before Hofstra rallied back from a 10-point deficit with less than a minute to play to down DU, 79-77. Both of Drexel's CAA wins came in Philadelphia. Zach Spiker is in his first season at DU head coach after leading Army in the previous seven seasons.
- According to KenPom.com, Drexel plays the fastest tempo in the CAA at 71.2 possessions per game, which ranks 60th nationally. They are among the top 100 in the country and fourth in the CAA in scoring at 77.2 points per game. The Dragons are 53rd nationally in offensive rebounds per game (12.4). DU is second in the CAA in rebounding (37.4). They are shooting 36.5 percent from 3-point range in league action.
- Defensively, Drexel ranks among the bottom of the league in scoring  (80.6), defensive field goal percentage (46.4) and defensive 3-point percentage (37.1). DU has allowed 86.3 points per game in CAA play. 
- Senior Rodney Williams leads the Dragons in scoring and ranks third in the CAA at 17.1 points per game. He is also fifth in the league in rebounding (6.9) and second in field goal percentage (53.5). Austin Williams is sixth in the CAA at 6.9 rebounds per game.
- Freshman Kurk Lee, who scored 25 points and dished out eight assists vs. W&M in the first meeting, is one of the top scoring freshmen in the CAA and ranks 10th overall in the league at 14.6 points per game. He is also fourth in the CAA and leads DU at 5.1 assists per game. Sammy Mojica rounds out the Dragon's double-digit scorers at 10.8 points per game, and he adds 5.8 rebounds per contest. Freshman Kari Jonsson leads the CAA at 44.8 percent from 3-point range.
- Drexel leads the all-time series with W&M at 21-14, but the Tribe owns victories in 12 of the last 20 meetings. The Tribe won the earlier meeting between the two teams on Jan. 30, downing the Dragons, 108-85, in Williamsburg. W&M has won the last three meetings between the teams in Philadelphia.
 
Dixon Named CAA Player of the Week for the Second Time
- For the second time in 2016-17, senior Daniel Dixon was named the CAA Player of the Week on Feb. 6. He averaged 27.7 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game in leading W&M to a 2-1 record during the week. It marked the second-straight week that a Tribe player garnered the CAA weekly honor after senior Omar Prewitt received the award on Jan. 30.
- Dixon, who took home the CAA Player of the Week honor on Jan. 2 as well, scored over 20 points in all three games last week and has tallied the mark in each of the Tribe's last five games. He shot 56.6 percent (30-of-53) from the field, 72.2 percent (13-of-18) from 3-point range and 83.3 percent (10-of-12) from the free throw line during the week.
- The Great Falls, Va., native is just the fourth player in the CAA to take home multiple player of the week awards in 2016-17, joining UNCW's Devontae Cacok (Nov. 21 and Dec. 19), Tyler Seibring of Elon (Jan. 23 and Jan. 30) and Northeastern's T.J. Williams (Nov. 14 and Dec. 26).
- In the Tribe's 108-85 win over Drexel, Dixon scored 23 of his game-high 32 points in the second half and finished the contest shooting 12-of-16 from the floor to go with six rebounds. He was a perfect 5-of-5 from 3-point range, which tied the W&M record for 3-point percentage in a game, and marked the third time in his career he made at least four 3-pointers without a miss in a game.
- Dixon followed with a nice stat line of 28 points, seven rebounds and four assists in the victory over Northeastern. He was 10-of-16 from the floor, including 5-of-7 from 3-point range against the Huskies. Dixon closed out the week scoring a game-high 23 points to go with four rebounds and four assists at Towson.
 
Helping Hand
- An important characteristic of the Tribe's offense under head coach Tony Shaver has been its ability to share the basketball. W&M currently ranks ninth nationally at 17.6 assists per game, and according to KenPom.com, is 24th nationally in assist percentage (61.4), as of Feb. 6.
- Against Towson, W&M eclipsed the 400-assist mark for the fifth straight season and ninth time in the last 10 years. Last season, the Tribe dished out 500 assists for just the second time in school history, finishing with 501. The Tribe is only eight assists away from 400 this season.
- The Tribe has led the CAA in assists in three of the last four years. The Tribe ranked among the top 100 nationally in assists per game each of the last three years, including 28th in 2015-16 (16.2) and 39th in 2014-15 (14.8).
- In 11 of Shaver's previous 13 seasons, W&M ranked among the top 100 in the country in assist percentage, according to KenPom.com. In fact, the Tribe has been among the top 50 in five of the last eight seasons. Assist percentage measures the percentage of made field goals assisted on by a team.

The Tribe ranks among the top 100 nationally in a number of statistical categories. Here is a look at where W&M ranks nationally (as of Feb. 6):

Oh What a Knight
- In his freshman season, Nathan Knight has made a significant impact off the bench, averaging 7.5 points and 4.4 rebounds per game.
- Knight currently leads the CAA in blocked shots at 1.6 per game. Over the last five games, he is averaging three blocks per game. He tallied three against Delaware, four in the win over UNCW and five at Towson.
- Knight came up big on the road at Towson, scoring career-high 15 points on 4-of-6 shooting and 7-of-8 from the free throw line in 19 minutes. He pulled down a team-high five rebounds and blocked five shots.
- In his first collegiate start vs. Milligan earlier this season, Knight tallied the first double-double of his young career. The Green and Gold rookie scored 14 points on 4-of-6 from the floor and 6-of-7 at the free throw line to go along with 10 rebounds. It was the first double-double for a W&M freshman since 2008.
- To make his night against the Buffaloes even more impressive, Knight blocked a W&M freshman record seven shots. His seven rejections rank fourth in W&M history and the most since David Cully's school-record 10 blocked shots against George Mason in 1996. Knight is just the second player along with Cully, who owns the other seven contests, to have seven or more blocked shots in a game.
- Along with his double-double vs. Milligan, Knight enjoyed double-digit performance at Louisville (14 points and seven rebounds), Duke (11 points and five rebounds) and UNCW (10 points and four rebounds).
 
Lighting Up the Scoreboard
- After scoring 80 or more points in 13 games last season, including four contest with 90-plus, the Tribe is once again flexing its offensive muscle this season scoring 80 or more points in 12 contests. W&M has scored more than 90 points on seven occasions in 2016-17. The Tribe owns three 100-point games this season, which is the second time in program history and first since 1954-55.
- W&M is averaging 81.6 points per game in 2016-17, which ranks second in the CAA and 28th nationally. It would set the program record, topping the school mark of 81.4 points per game in 1955. In CAA play, the Tribe is scoring 82.2 points per game.
- Over the last four seasons, W&M has scored 80 or more points in a game on 44 occasions. The Tribe is 38-6 (.864) over the stretch when accomplishing the feat. During head coach Tony Shaver's first 10 seasons at W&M, the Tribe scored 80 or more points 39 times with the record of 29-10 in those contests.
- W&M has ranked among the top three in the CAA in scoring each of the last four years, the only program in the league to do so.
- The Green and Gold recorded its third 100-point game of the season in a 108-85 triumph over Drexel. The 108 points were the second most in a CAA game in program history and tied highest total ever allowed by the Dragons in regulation.
- The Tribe lit up the scoreboard in back-to-back wins over Milligan and Savannah State to the tune of 113 and 112 points, respectively. It marked the first time in the 112-year history of W&M basketball that the program topped the century mark in back-to-back games.
 
Elite Shooting
- The Tribe has shot over 50 percent from the field in eight of its last 11 games overall. During the team's four-game win streak from Jan. 26 through Feb. 2, W&M shot 60.2 percent (142-of-236) from the field. Over the last 11 games, W&M has shot 52.3 percent (336-of-642) from the field.
- W&M has 12 games of 50 percent or better shooting in 2016-17 and is 11-1 in those contests. Under head coach Tony Shaver, the Tribe is 91-12 (.883) when shooting 50 percent or better from the field, including an impressive 46-4 (.920) mark over the last four seasons.
- The Tribe has ranked among the national leaders in shooting in recent seasons. According to advanced statistical website KenPom.com, the Green and Gold has ranked among the nation's elite in effective field goal percentage and two-point percentage over the last seven seasons. W&M has also ranked among the country's top shooting teams in traditional field goal percentage in the last five years.
- This season, W&M currently ranks 17th (49 percent). The Tribe ranked among the top 30 nationally each of the previous four seasons. The Green and Gold ranked as high as No. 14 in 2014-15 (48.3), while coming in 21st in 2015-16 (48), 25th in 2013-14 (47.6) and 30th in 2012-13 (46.7).
- The Green and Gold is one of only three teams nationally, along with Gonzaga and Belmont, to rank among the top 30 nationally each of the last five years.
- W&M ranked among the top 25 nationally in effective field goal percentage each of the last four seasons. In 2016-17, the Tribe ranks 17th at 56.1 percent. The Green and Gold ranked sixth in the category in both 2013-14 (55.9) and 2014-15 (56.3) along with coming in at No. 16 (54.8) last season. Effective field goal percentage is the same as regular field goal percentage, but gives teams more credit for made 3-point field goals.
- The Tribe ranked among the national leaders in two-point field goal percentage in six of the last seven campaigns. The Green and Gold is currently 25th nationally at 54.7 percent. Each of the previous three campaigns, W&M was among the top 25 nationally, coming in 12th in 2016 (54.7) and eighth in 2015 (54.8).
 
Double-Digit 3-Pointers
- The Tribe has connected on 3-pointers at a high rate in 2016-17. The Green and Gold recorded the top two 3-point totals in program history this season. W&M hit a school-record 19 triples in a December win over Savannah State, before hitting 17 against Drexel on Jan. 30.
- Over the last eight seasons, W&M is averaging nearly 12 games of double-digit 3-pointers per campaign, meaning it hits 10 or more 3-pointers in a more than a third of its games each year. In 2016-17, the Tribe has knocked down double-digit 3-pointers in 11 games. W&M is 9-2 in those contets.
- W&M ranks third in the CAA and ranks 26th nationally at 9.4 3-pointers made per game.
- In program history, W&M has hit 15 or more 3-pointers on 20 occasions, and 16 of those have come under head coach Tony Shaver. The Green and Gold hit 15 or more 3-pointers three times in 2016-17, including the seventh-highest total of 15 vs. Presbyterian on Nov. 19.
- The Tribe is 69-44 under Shaver when hitting 10 or more 3-pointers. Of the Tribe's 113 games of double-digit triples under Shaver, 104 have come over the last nine years with W&M posting a 64-40 record.
