Baseball Set for Home Opening Series, Welcomes Lafayette This Weekend

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William & Mary baseball team opens the home portion of its schedule as it welcomes Lafayette to Plumeri Park for a three-game series this weekend. The series gets underway on Friday, Feb. 24 at 4 p.m., continues Saturday, Feb. 25 at 2 p.m., and concludes on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 1 p.m.

The William & Mary baseball team opens the home portion of its schedule as it welcomes Lafayette for a three-game series this weekend. The three-game series starts on Friday, Feb. 24 at 4 p.m., continues on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 2 p.m., and concludes on Sunday, Feb. 25 at 1 p.m. The Tribe is 8-1 under coach Murphy in home opening weekends at Plumeri Park in his tenure.

Scouting the Leopards
Lafayette enters the weekend also looking to snap a three-game skid. The Leopards picked up a 10-2 season opening victory over Notre Dame, but fell in their final three games in San Antonio last weekend. Last weekend, Lafayette batted .262 as a team. Trey Durrah went 3-for-5 with a two doubles and two RBI in the two games he played. Luke Robinson started all four games, hitting .533 (8-for-15) with three doubles, a triple, and four RBI. On the mound, the Leopards posted a 5.94 team ERA to start the season. Trevor Houck tossed eight inning allowing just two runs on one hit and struck out seven. Brett Kreyer started and tossed 6.0 of one hit baseball as well. Mark Anderson was the highlight out of Lafayette's bullpen, tossing 4.2 innings, allowing just one hit, and striking out four. Joe Kinney is in his 18th season at Lafayette. He owns a 312-475-2 mark in his time in Easton, Pa.

Series History
W&M and Lafayette meet for the fifth-seventh time in series history over the weekend. The series is deadlocked 2-2, so far. The two teams have not met since the 1989 season.

On Deck
The Tribe opens mid-week play with a pair of road games next week. The Tribe heads to Charlottesville to take on nationally ranked Virginia in a rematch from last year's NCAA Regional on Tuesday, Feb. 28, before heading to VMI on Wednesday, March 1. Both first pitches are set for 3 p.m. W&M then heads to the Irish Classic, which is hosted by Norte Dame and will be played at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary, N.C. The Green and Gold will square off with Monmouth (3/3), Dayton (3/4), and Rhode Island (3/5).

Weekly Awards
Freshman Brandon Raquet burst onto the scene last weekend at No. 2 Florida on the way to CAA Rookie of the Week honors for the week of Feb. 20. Raquet hit .333 (4-for-12), including homer in his first career at-bat. He collected a hit in all three games, drove in two, and scored three times.

Large and in Charge
Junior Cullen Large also enjoyed a strong start to the season last weekend. He hit .364 (4-for-11) with a double, triple, three RBI, and three runs scored. He's the Tribe's top returning offensive threat, finishing 2016 with a .328 batting average, 20 doubles, two triples, seven homers, and 46 RBI.
