Men's Basketball Hosts Hofstra in CAA Opener on Saturday Afternoon

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary men's basketball team opens Colonial Athletic Association play on Saturday, hosting Hofstra at 4 p.m. The top two teams in the league in terms of adjust offensive efficiency square off in a rivalry that has been split down the middle over the last decade.

Saturday's match-up with Hofstra will be a Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night. Tribe faculty & staff can claim complimentary tickets for themselves and up to four members of their immediate families. It will also be the Camper Reunion Game. All Tribe Basketball camp members are invited back to see old friends and cheer on the Tribe! Campers and their families will receive discounted $6 admission. W&M News and Notes
- The Tribe opens the CAA portion of its schedule at home for the fifth time in the last six years and is 13-19 all-time in CAA openers with five wins coming under head coach Tony Shaver. The Green and Gold is 12-9 when its league opener come inside Kaplan Arena, including wins in three of its last four openers at home.
 
- Hofstra leads the all-time series with W&M at 19-12, but the teams have split the last 20 meetings dating back to 2008. W&M has won four of the last six tilts in Williamsburg.
 
- Saturday's match-up pits the top two teams in the CAA in terms of offensive efficiency according to KenPom.com. The Tribe ranks 57th nationally at 110.4, while Hofstra is 82nd in the country at 108.7.  The Green and Gold has ranked in the top 60 in adjusted offensive efficiency each of the previous four seasons, including a high of No. 31 in 2015 (113.9).
 
- W&M is the only team in the CAA to win 10 or more league games and finish among the top four each of the last four years. Last season, the Tribe advanced to the conference tournament semifinals for the fourth year in a row, the only CAA program that can make the claim.
 
- The Green and Gold is the best shooting team in the country, ranking among the top 12 in 3-point (second at 45.9), free throw (fourth at 80.1) and field goal (12th at 51.5) percentages. W&M is the only team in the country to rank among the top 20 in all three shooting categories.
 
- The Tribe offense is averaging 87 points per game, which leads the CAA and ranks 18th nationally. It marks the second-straight season W&M has averaged over 80 points per game. The scoring averaging would be the highest in the CAA since 1996 (Mason at 90.6).
 
- W&M set a program record with 126 points in the victory over Milligan on Dec. 17. It marked the Tribe's fourth game with 100 points this season, which is the most in program history. Over the last two seasons, the Tribe has seven games of 100 or more points.
 
- Sophomore Justin Pierce recorded his fourth double-double this season with 20 points and 10 rebounds against Milligan. It was his second 20-10 double-double this season to go along with a 21-point, 17-rebound effort at Savannah State. He is nearly averaging a double-double at 13.3 points and 9.2 rebounds per contest. Pierce, who is 43rd nationally in rebounding, has led the Tribe in rebounding in nine of its 11 games with five double-digit games.
 
- Senior David Cohn produced his CAA-leading fourth double-digit assist game with 10 helpers vs. Milligan. He has nine over his Tribe career, which is a program record. Cohn leads the CAA and ranks ninth nationally at 7.2 assists per game. In just three seasons, he ranks fourth in program history with 362 assists and is six shy of third and seven away from second.
 
- Sophomore Nathan Knight has been the Tribe's top offensive threat, ranking fourth in the CAA and 77th nationally at 18.7 points per game. He has produced two 30-point, 10-rebound double-doubles in 2017-18. Knight has scored in double figures in all 11 games this season. He also ranks 24th nationally at 2.6 blocks per game and 60th in free throws made (61). 
 
- According to the website KenPom.com, W&M ranked among the top 25 nationally in effective field goal percentage each of the last six seasons, including 2017-18. W&M is currently 10th at 58.8 percent and finished as high as No. 6 in both 2013-14 and 2014-15.
 
- Over the last eight games, senior Connor Burchfield (34-of-53) and sophomore Matt Milon (28-of-49) have combined to shoot 60.8 percent (62-of-102) from 3 and hitting 7.8 triples per game. On the year, Burchfield leads the CAA in 3-point percentage (56.7) and 3-pointers made (3.5), coming in third and 20th nationally. Milon is second in the league in both 3-point percentage (53.7) and 3-pointers made (3.3), ranking sixth and 25th nationally. They are the only pair of teammates to rank in the top 10 in 3-point percentage.
 
- Over the last eight games, W&M is averaging 22.1 assists per game and has produced five games with 20 or more assists. On the season, the Tribe averages 19 assists per game, which leads the CAA and ranks ninth nationally. Over the last two years, the Tribe has produced 15 games of 20 or more assists (14-1), and since 2010, is 33-2 when accomplishing the feat.
