Box Score WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary baseball team fell in the second game of a doubleheader to Delaware 4-2 on Saturday afternoon at Plumeri Park. With the decision the Tribe falls to 22-22, 11-6 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while the Blue Hens improve to 26-18, 5-11 in league action.
Again junior
Ryder Miconi led the Tribe with three hits in the setback. Sophomore
Ryan Hall also collected a pair of base knocks. As a team, W&M had 10 hits, but stranded 14 runners on the base paths.
Delaware took the early lead with one swing of the bat in the top of the first inning. Kyle Baker homered over the left field wall, making the score 1-0.
William & Mary answered right back with a run of its own in the bottom of the first, scoring for the 15th time this season in its first at-bat. Hall led off the frame with a double off of the right field wall, moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by redshirt freshman
Kyle Wrighte. Sophomore
Cullen Large followed with a single into centerfield, tying the score.
The Blue Hens retook the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning. James Meeker reached on an error to start the inning. The next batter, Kevin Mohollen tripled scoring the first run of the frame. After an out, Nick Tierno doubled down the right field line giving UD the 3-1 lead.
W&M cut into the lead with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Miconi reached on a one-out error, moving to second on a walk to senior
Josh Smith. With two outs, freshman
Hunter Smith singled into right, plating Miconi.
UD came right back with a run in the visitor's half of the eighth inning. Meeker led off the inning with a single, moving up a sacrifice bunt. A single from Baker on the corners, before a groundout, restored the Hen's two run advantage, 4-2.
Junior
Daniel Powers was charged with his third loss of the season. He tossed a career-long 7.2 innings, allowing four runs (three earned), on eight hits with a strikeout. Sophomore
Charlie Fletcher came on for the final 1.1 innings and only allowed a walk.
Colman Vila got his second win going 3.1 innings of relief. He allowed two hits and an unearned run. Burk FitzPatrick came on earned his third save enduing a game ending double play on one pitch.
The Green and Gold conclude its home schedule with a three-game CAA series against Towson. The set gets underway from Plumeri Park on Friday, May 6 at 6 p.m.
