Joseph Gaouette combined to pitch the William & Mary baseball team to a 2-0 shutout victory over Northeastern in Boston on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Tribe improves to 18-20, 7-5 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while Huskies fall to 19-17, 7-5 in league action.
Brown delivered his best start of the season tossing eight innings, allowing just four hits and no runs in his third victory of the year. The junior had eight strikeouts and didn't allow a runner to reach passed second base. Gaouette came on in the ninth and fanned the side to nail down his seventh save of the season. It was also the senior's 14th career save, which ties him for the school record in saves. The game was W&M's third shutout of the season, and its second consecutive CAA shutout after blanking James Madison last Sunday.
Offensively, senior
Josh Smith provided the Green and Gold's lone RBI on an insurance run solo shot in the top of the ninth inning. Sophomore
Cullen Large scored W&M's other run in the top of the eighth.
W&M scored the game's first run on a two out-rally in the top of the eighth inning. Large and senior
Charley Gould recorded back-to-back singles putting runners on the corners. The first pitch to junior
Ryder Miconi squirted away from the catcher and gave the Tribe a 1-0 lead.
Josh Smith connected on a solo shot in the top of the ninth inning doubling the College's advantage. His sixth homer of the season was belted over the right field wall.
Northeastern two best chances to score came in the bottom of the second and eighth innings. In the second, Pat Madigan reached on an error and moved to second on a sac bunt, but Brown retired the next two batters to end the inning. Again in the eighth, the Huskies threatened with runners on first and second and an out, but this time Brown fanned the next two batters.
Aaron Civale was credited with just his second loss of the season for the Huskies. He tossed eight innings allowing one unearned run on six hits, while he had 10 strikeouts. Offensively, Cam Walsh led NU with a pair of hits.
The Green and Gold go for the series win tomorrow, Saturday, April 23 with first pitch set for 1 p.m. The set concludes on Sunday, April 24 at noon.
