WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary men's tennis team rolled to a 6-1 win over streaking Navy on Saturday afternoon at the
Millie West Tennis Facility. The Midshipmen (17-8) entered the match winners of six straight and 11 of its last 12, but the Tribe (13-8) rallied to claim the doubles point with triumphs at the top two positions and won five of the six singles tilts, including four in straight sets, to cement the victory.
After Navy claimed the No. 3 doubles slot, W&M rallied to take the point with 7-5 wins at the top two spots. Senior
Scott Huang and sophomore
Christian Cargill evened things with a win at No. 1. The Tribe duo broke the Navy pair of Austin Jones and Tucker Massie in the final game, as the Midshipmen could not return Huang's winner on the deciding point. Cargill and Huang improved to 9-4 with their first win at the top doubles spot over a Navy pair that entered the match at 8-3.
At No. 2, freshman
Tristan Bautil and sophomore
Ryan Newman won the last three games to upend Navy's Aries Wong and Walker Sims, 7-5. After the Green and Gold pairing broke Navy to move in front 6-5, Bautil served out the triumph to even the pair's record at 2-2.
Junior
Damon Niquet wasted little time extending W&M's lead to 2-0 with his 14th-straight victory. He dropped just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 rout of Massie at No. 6 singles. Niquet pushed his ledger to 17-8 and an impressive 14-1 in dual-match play.
At the third singles spot, sophomore
Alec Miller turned in a strong outing for his 17th win of the year. After dropping the first game, Miller won six straight to take the opening set from Wong. The Midshipmen player led 2-1 in the second set, before Miller won five-straight games to push his record to 5-2 at No. 3.
Junior
Aidan Talcott won the clinching match at the No. 5 spot. He posted a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Andrey Majkic. Talcott ran his season mark to 17-10 and 13-4 in duals.
Junior
Addison Appleby and sophomore
Lars de Boer round out the Tribe victory with singles wins at No. 2 and No. 4, respectively. After dropping the opening set to Krishna Jana, 6-4, Appleby rallied to win the second 6-2. In the third-set super tiebreaker, the Tribe junior won the final two points in claiming his 10th win of the year, 10-8. de Boer upended Walker, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 4 to jump his season mark to 15-11.
The Tribe closes out the regular season with CAA foe James Madison on Sunday, April 17, at the
Millie West Tennis Facility. The match with the Dukes, which starts at 1 p.m., will also serve as Senior Day. In between doubles and singles, W&M will honor its lone senior
Scott Huang. During his four years in Williamsburg, Huang has helped the Tribe to 51 dual-match wins and the 2015 CAA Championship.
