Men's Tennis Hosts Navy and JMU to Cap the Regular Season

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William & Mary men's tennis team closes out the regular season with a pair of home matches at the Millie West Tennis Facility this weekend. The Tribe hosts Navy on Saturday, April 16, at 11 a.m., in a match rescheduled after a January postponed due to winter weather. On Sunday, W&M welcomes Colonial Athletic Association foe James Madison to Williamsburg for Senior Day at 1 p.m. The Tribe will honor its lone senior, Scott Huang, for his contributions to the program in between doubles and singles.
 
Scouting William & Mary
The Tribe suffered a pair of instate losses to former CAA counterparts in VCU, 4-1, and No. 48 Old Dominion, 4-0, last week. The Green and Gold fell out of the national rankings for the first time since March 1 in the latest standings released on Tuesday. W&M sits at 12-8 on the year entering its final two regular-season matches. Last week closed out a difficult six-match road swing for W&M, which included four matches against nationally-ranked competition. During the stretch, the Tribe tallied its best nationally-ranked win since 2008, topping then-No. 44 Drake, 4-2, at the Rice Invitational. W&M also faced No. 9 Texas Tech, No. 40 Rice and No. 48 Old Dominion during the tough stretch. In total, five of the Tribe's eight setbacks this season have comes to teams in the national top 50. Juniors Damon Niquet and Aidan Talcott along with sophomore Alec Miller lead the Tribe in singles wins with 16 each on the year. Niquet is currently on a 13-match win streak and leads W&M with a 13-1 dual-match ledger. Miller owns 10 dual-match wins, including eight at the top three spots, while Talcott is an impressive 12-4 in dual-match competition. Sophomore Christian Cargill holds down the No. 1 singles position and has nine wins at the spot. In doubles, Cargill continues to lead the Tribe with 17 wins and over his first two seasons, has 47 doubles victories. A quartet of Tribe athletes in senior Scott Huang, sophomores Lars de Boer and Cargill and freshman Austin Childs earned W&M Provost Awards in March for their work in the classroom.  
 
Senior Salute
Over his four seasons with the Green and Gold, senior Scott Huang has helped W&M to 50 dual-match wins and a CAA Championship in 2015. He tallied 45 singles wins and 47 doubles victories during his career. Huang is a four-time selection for both the W&M Provost Award and the ITA Scholar-Athlete honor. Twice this season, Huang earned CAA Doubles Team of the Week honors. He garnered the distinction with Ryan Newman on March 10 after upsetting the No. 57-ranked duo from Valparaiso, before taking home the honor on March 29 with Christian Cargill after going 3-0 at the Rice Invite, including a nationally-ranked win over the No. 53 Texas Tech duo. Huang is second on the team with 14 doubles wins this season and owns a 7-6 singles mark.
 
Scouting Navy
The Midshipmen have won six straight and sit at 17-7 overall with a 2-0 ledger in the Patriot League. In fact, Navy owns wins in 11 of its last 12 matches entering the weekend. W&M and Navy have five common opponents in Penn, Howard, Villanova, Elon and Norfolk State. W&M is 4-1 against the group, while the Midshipmen are 3-2. The lone difference between the two was W&M's 5-2 win over Penn compared the Mids 7-0 loss. Austin Jones tops Navy with a 22-10 overall record, including a 14-3 mark at No. 1. Walker Sims is an impressive 19-6 on the year with a dual-match record of 12-2, while Krishna Jana owns 13 wins at a 6-4 ledger at No. 2. Jones and Tucker Massie comprise the Midshipmen's top doubles team, holding an 8-3 mark at No. 1. Navy has won the doubles point on 16 occasions this season, including 14 of the last 16 matches.
 
Series History: W&M vs. Navy
Navy leads the all-times series between the former CAA rivals, but the Tribe has won each of the last four match-ups. Recently, the Green and Gold dispatched of the Midshipmen, 7-0, in 2011 and 5-2 in 2013, both in Williamsburg.
 
Scouting James Madison
JMU enters the weekend at 9-9 overall and 1-2 in CAA play. The Dukes downed Delaware in league play, while suffering loses to Charleston and Elon. James Madison hosts Drexel on Saturday before heading to Williamsburg to face the Tribe on Sunday. W&M and JMU have seven common opponents in Bucknell, Radford, Elon, Coastal Carolina, Howard, Norfolk State and Penn State. W&M is 5-2 against the group, while JMU is 4-3. The lone difference in records was W&M's 6-1 win over Coastal Carolina compared to the Dukes 4-0 loss. Sebastian Salinas is 8-8 at No. 1 singles for JMU and 14-10 overall. Brett Moorhead owns a 14-11 record, playing mainly the top three singles posts. In doubles, Maxi Branth and Tristan Stitt are 8-1 and have played at the No. 1 spot recently, going 3-0 in last three matches.
 
Series History: W&M vs. James Madison
W&M leads the all-time series with the Dukes at 30-15. The Tribe has won 21 of the last 22 meetings in the series, including each of the last four. W&M is 25-7 against JMU in Williamsburg, including a 6-1 win last season. The Dukes last victory in the series came in Williamsburg during the 2012 season by a 4-1 score.

The Tribe will begin defense of its CAA Championship at the league tournament, April 22-24. Elon University will host both the men's and women's tennis championships for the first time at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center and Burlington Tennis Center in North Carolina. The seeding for the event will be released early next week. The CAA quarterfinals will be on Friday, April 22, at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., at the Burlington Tennis Center. The semifinals and championship are set for 9 a.m., on Saturday, April 23, and Sunday, April 24, respectively, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
