Baseball Falls in Middle Game at Elon 13-7

Box Score ELON, N.C. – Three Elon home runs proved to be the difference as the William & Mary baseball team fell 13-7 in the middle game of a three-game series on Saturday afternoon. With the setback, the Tribe falls to 8-11, 1-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while the Phoenix improve to 9-10, 1-1 in league action.
 
Senior Charley Gould and sophomore Ryan Hall led the Tribe with two hits apiece. Gould and junior Ryder Miconi had two RBI in the setback for W&M.
 
Elon jumped on the board with five runs in the home half of the first inning. Back-to-back walks to Ryne Ogren and Kory Shumate started the inning. The next batter, Kyle Jackson doubled down the left field line, clearing the bases. After a walk and an out, a throwing error on a steal attempt allowed for Jackson to score the third run. After an out, Will Nance reached on an error allowing Danny Lynch to score and putting runners on the corners. The final run of the frame came around on a single from CJ Young, giving the Phoenix a 5-0 lead.
 
W&M came storming back and scored six runs in the top of the second, taking a 6-5 lead. Freshman Zach Pearson reached on a one-out error, moving to second when senior Josh Smith reached on a fielder's choice. The next batter, freshman Kyle Wrighte drew a walk loading the bases. Freshman Matthew Keane followed with a walk, bringing in the first run. Junior Charles Ameer followed suit with a single, brining home one. The next batter, Miconi singled through the right side plating both, Keane and Josh Smith. The final runs of the inning came on a two-out double from right center by Gould.
 
The Phoenix jumped back in front in the bottom of the third inning thanks to the long ball. Tyler McVicar started the rally with a single. After an out, Young launched a homerun over left field wall, catapulting Elon to 7-6 advantage.
 
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Tribe tied the score in the top half of the fifth inning. Back-to-back singles from Hall and Gould set the table. Pearson came through with a double to right center that scored Hall, and knotted the score 7-7.
 
Elon regained the lead for good with a run in the home half of the fifth. With one-out, Young tripled, before Austin Leeny hit a sacrifice fly to center, accounting for the run.
 
In the sixth, Schumate led off the frame with a triple, before a wild pitch allowed brought him home. With two outs, Nick Zammarelli launched the second homer of the game for the Phoenix, making it 10-7.
 
A three-run homer extended the Phoenix lead to six in the bottom of the eighth inning. Jackson led off the inning with a walk, moving to second on a stolen base. After two outs, and an intentional walk, Liam O'Regan hit the third Phoenix homer, giving Elon on a 13-7 lead.

The Tribe threatened in the the top of the ninth inning with its first two batters reaching. However, a double play and a flyout ended the rally and the game.
 
Senior Mitchell Aker made the start, but didn't factor into the decision. He pitched three innings allowing seven runs (four earned) on six hits with two strikeouts. Freshman Kinston Carson was saddled with his first loss of the season tossing two innings allowing two runs on three hits.
 
Ryan Conroy picked up his third win for Elon. He went 3.2 innings of relief allowing non runs on one hit with two strikeouts. Young had three hits and three RBI for the Phoenix. Shumate, Lynch, and McVicar all had two hits for the Phoenix.
 
The series concludes with the rubber match tomorrow, Sunday, March 20. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m.
