WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The No. 70-ranked William & Mary men's tennis team made quick work of in-state foe Norfolk State in rolling a 6-1 on Friday morning at the
Millie West Tennis Facility. The Green and Gold won its third-straight match and 10th overall in just over two hours. The Tribe improved to 10-3 on the year, marking the fifth time since 1977 that the program started the year 10-3 or better.
Â
The Tribe captured the doubles point thanks to a victory at the No. 2 post from junior
Addison Appleby and sophomore
Christian Cargill. The Green and Gold took the No. 3 slot by default, before the Spartans countered with a win at the top position. Appleby and Cargill won the final two games in surging past Benedikt Henning and Dan Dumitrascu, 6-4, for their second win in as many matches to clinch the pairs' point. The Tribe tandem improved to an impressive 11-5 over the last two seasons.
Â
The Green and Gold rolled in singles, dropping four games or less at each of No. 2, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5. Appleby won for the fourth time in his last five matches, 6-0, 6-2, over Antonio Pejic, who entered the match at 9-4 on the year, at the second position. The Tribe junior pushed his season ledger to 8-7 and 2-1 at the No. 2 post.
Â
Junior
Aidan Talcott remained undefeated in dual-match play, clinching the Tribe victory over Norfolk State with a win at No. 5. He made quick work of Flavian Fernandez, 6-2, 6-1, running his dual record to a spotless 12-0. Talcott continues to lead the Tribe with a 16-6 record.
Â
Sophomores
Alec Miller and
Lars de Boer rounded out the Tribe win, dropping just four games apiece in picking up victories at No. 3 and No. 4. Miller won his third-straight match at the three spot, downing Dumitrascu, 6-2, 6-2. After winning the opening set, 6-4, de Boer bounced Fatehdeep Singh, 6-0, in the second for his seventh win in the last eight matches. Miller pushed his season mark to 15-11, while de Boer jumped to 13-7 overall and 9-2 in dual-match competition.
Â
The Tribe closes out its home stand when it welcomes reigning Conference USA Champion UT San Antonio to Williamsburg on Saturday, March. 19. Tribe head coach
Jeff Kader spent the previous five seasons at UTSA before returning his alma mater over the summer. The match carries a 10 a.m. start time and will be played outdoors at the
