Opening Tip
The William & Mary women's basketball team looks to make it two in a row as they hit the road for the first time in 2016-17 season with a trip down I-64 East to take on Hampton-Roads rival Old Dominion on Sunday, Nov. 20. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. Today's contest is the second of three games in five days and is the first of W&M's 13-road contests this season. The Green and Gold meets Old Dominion for the 92nd time in series history in Sunday's matinee.
Last Time Out
The William & Mary women's basketball team used a balanced attack and suffocating defense to rout in-state rival Richmond, 67-39, on Friday night at Kaplan Arena. The Tribe posted its best defensive field goal percentage since 2009 and limited the Spiders (0-3) to the fewest points for the W&M opponent since 2008. Senior
Marlena Tremba scored a game-high 13 points on 4-of-8 from the floor and 4-of-5 from the free throw line to go with six assists. Sophomore
Bianca Boggs added a nice stat line of 11 points, six rebounds and four assists. Senior
Alexandra Masaquel, junior
Abby Rendle and freshman
Victoria Reynolds tallied eight points apiece. Masaquel added a game-high eight rebounds, while Reynolds chipped in six on the glass. Defensively, the Green and Gold did a number on the Spiders, holding them to just 23.5 percent (12-of-51) from the floor. Even more impressive, Richmond, who dropped a 63-56 at Virginia last week, connected on just 1-of-11 (9.1 percent) and 1-of-16 (6.3 percent) in the first and fourth quarters, respectively. The defensive field goal percentage was the best for a Tribe team since limiting South Alabama to 21.9 percent (14-of-64) in 2009. Richmond's 39 points were the fewest for a Tribe foe since holding Norfolk State to 38 points in 2008.
Scouting the Monarchs
Old Dominion will play just its second game of the season as it welcomes William & Mary on Sunday afternoon. The Lady Monarchs opened their season with a 65-54 victory over in-city rival Norfolk State on Friday night. Destinee Young and Jennie Simms each turned in double-doubles with 20 points and 10 rebounds, and 19 points and 14 boards, respectively. As a team, ODU dominated the glass outrebounding the Spartans 54-39, but only forced nine NSU miscues. Karen Barefoot is in her sixth season in Norfolk. She has led the Lady Monarchs to a 87-79 mark, while she has posted a 297-222 record in 19 season as a college head coach.
Series History
The Green and Gold meets Old Dominion for the 92nd time in series history in Sunday's matinee. The Monarchs lead the all-time series by 71-20 mark, but the Tribe has picked up a 75-64 victory last season in Williamsburg. Senior
Marlena Tremba led the Tribe with 20 points and five assists, while classmate
Alexandra Masaquel added 16 points and nine rebounds, while junior
Abby Rendle also had 16 points and six rebounds. Senior
Latrice Hunter also added nine points off of the bench. ODU's Jennie Simms scored 35 points to pace ODU.
The Road Ahead
William & Mary concludes its brief two-game road swing as it travels to USC Upstate on Tuesday, Nov. 22 for the first-ever meeting between the two schools. After a six-day hiatus for Thanksgiving, the Tribe returns to Williamsburg to open a two-game homestand against Delaware State on Monday, Nov. 28. Both games are set for 7 p.m. tipoffs.
D, D, D, De-fense
The Tribe put together one of its best defensive performances in recent memory on Friday night against Richmond. W&M limited the Spiders to just 39 points, the fewest since 2008, and also held UofR to 23.5, the best since 2009. Under head coach
Ed Swanson, W&M is 8-1 when limiting opponents to 50 points, or less, and a perfect 2-0 when they hold their competition to 40 points, or less.
Making them Count
W&M has been getting to the line and making its freebies count during the early stages of the season. As a team, the Tribe is shooting 87.5-perecent (28-of-32) from the line. Sophomore
Bianca Boggs (6-for-6), junior
Abby Rendle (4-for-4), and
Latrice Hunter (2-for-2) are still perfect from the line.
Sharing the Rock
A key over the past three seasons to the Tribe's success has been the amount of assists the Tribe have had per game with wins being higher than losses. So far this season that stat has kept up as the Green and Gold had 18 helpers in the win versus Richmond, opposed to 14 in the setback against St. John's.
Scoring the Seventies
Another good indicator of success under coach Swanson is reaching the 70-point mark. The seven times the Tribe has reached that mark under Swanson they have won. Last year, when W&M scored, at least, 60 they went 14-5, opposed to 1-10 with 59, or less.
O, Canada
Junior
Jeanne Gaumont had an excellent game off of the bench in the win versus Richmond. The Saint-Lambert, Quebec native added seven points, all in the fourth quarter, and four rebounds. Last season, Gaumont, when healthy, saw consistent playing time and finished the season averaging 3.5 points and 2.2 rebounds.
