WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - William & Mary head men's basketball coach

A standout in football, basketball, golf and baseball for the Bison, Shaver entered the third Hall of Fame of his career after being inducted into the Halls of Fame at Episcopal High School in 2005 and at Hampden-Sydney College in 2004. He is the winningest coach in the history of both programs.
Shaver joined a group of 14 former HPC athletes to earn Hall of Fame nods, including Kenny Angel (1980), Hayes Dallas (1983), Eddie Dyer (1965), David Fagg (1954), Charlie Hill (1964), Gail Lewis (1978), Kimrey Millar (1978), Molly Mills (1975), Frank Montgomery (1941), James Montgomery (1936), Jim Morgan (1961), Jim Simeon (1962) and David Upchurch (1990). A multi-time all-conference selection in both football and basketball, Shaver quarterbacked the football team to the state finals in 1971. Following his graduation from HPC in 1972, he joined the North Carolina Tar Heels under the direction of head coach Dean Smith. Originally a walk-on, Shaver earned a scholarship his rookie season, when he was awarded the prestigious Butch Bennett Award, presented to the freshman who exemplifies determination, sportsmanship and sacrifice for the team. He was voted the honoree by his teammates.
Shaver is the winningest head coach in W&M basketball history with 176 victories, including three-straight 20-win seasons. In fact, he has led W&M to five of its top 10 single-season win totals, including four of the program's nine all-time 20-win seasons, in its 111-year history. The longest tenured head coach in the Colonial Athletic Association, Shaver ranks 20th among active Division I head coaches in victories with 534. He led W&M to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) in 2010 and 2015, a CAA regular season championship in 2015 and four CAA Tournament championship games (2008, 2010, 2014 and 2015) during his tenure.
