Men's Basketball Hosts CAA Leader Northeastern Saturday

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Fresh off winning its second straight CAA contest, the William & Mary men's basketball team returns home to host league leader Northeastern on Saturday afternoon at Kaplan Arena. The rematch of the 2015 CAA Championship Game is slated for 4 p.m. and will be broadcast for FREE in HD on Tribe Athletics TV via Stretch Internet.

Tribe fans can also catch the men's basketball action over the Tribe Radio Network with Jay Colley and Charlie Woollum on the call. The Tide 92.3 FM and 107.9 Bach FM are the flagship stations of the Tribe Radio Network and the audio is also available over the Web at TribeAthletics.com.

News and Notes
-  Northeastern leads the all-time series with the Tribe at 10-9, but W&M holds a 7-1 advantage in Williamsburg. Last season, the teams each won on its home court, before NU claimed the CAA title with a victory in Baltimore.
 
- Saturday's match-up is not only a rematch of the 2015 CAA Championship Game, but also a battle of two of the top offenses in the league. NU ranks 57th nationally according to KenPom.com in offensive efficiency (108.8), while W&M is 73rd at 107.9. The Tribe leads the CAA and ranks 41st nationally in field goal percentage (47.6), and the Huskies are 30th in the country in 3-point percentage (38.7).
 
- W&M connected on better than 50 percent from the floor in each of its last two victories over Charleston (57.8 percent) and at Drexel (53.1 percent). The Green and Gold is shooting a league-best 51.3 percent in CAA action.
 
- As a team, the Tribe is averaging 5.3 blocked shots per game, which ranks 37th nationally. W&M has four of the top 15 shot blockers in the CAA.
 
- Over the last three games, the Green and Gold is shooting 80.4 percent from the free throw line, pushing its season percentage to 70.7. W&M ranks third in the CAA in free throw percentage.
 
- Senior Terry Tarpey leads the CAA in both steals (2.9) and blocked shots (1.5) per game. For the second time in the last five games, he tallied six steals in the win at Drexel. Tarpey ranks fourth nationally in steals per game.
 
- Junior Daniel Dixon has scored in double figures in six straight games, averaging 16 points per game over the stretch. He tallied 19 points in the win at Drexel on Thursday.
 
Scouting Northeastern
Northeastern enters the weekend as the only undefeated team in the CAA at 3-0 following a dominating 88-56 win over Delaware at home on Thursday. NU also posted road wins at Elon (86-79) and UNCW (65-63) last week. The Huskies, in their 10th season under head coach Bill Coen, sit at 11-5 overall on the year, which includes a victory at No. 15 Miami (Fla.).
 
In the win over Delaware, the Huskies dished out 25 assists on their 31 made field goals and knocked down a school-record 14 3-pointers. Northeastern ranks 57th nationally according to KenPom.com in offensive efficiency at 108.8 and has been even better in CAA play leading the league at 117.1. NU ranks 30th nationally at 38.7 percent from 3-point range and 37th in 3-pointers made per game at 9.0. The Huskies lead the league in free throw shooting at 71.8 percent, including an 82.5-percent clip in league play. Defensively, opponents average 70.2 points per game against NU, shooting 45.2 percent from the field and 36.2 percent from 3-point range.
 
Northeastern is led by two of the top four scorers in the CAA in seniors David Walker and Quincy Ford. Walker ranks second in the CAA at 18.4 points per game, while also coming in second in offensive rating according to KenPom.com. He is second in the league in 3-point (44.3) and free throw percentage (85.6) to go with four assists per game. Ford averages 17 points per game, which ranks fourth in the league, while adding the third-best rebounding average in the CAA at 7.6 per game. He shoots 39.8 percent from 3-point range. Senior Zach Stahl rounds out the double-digit scorers at 12.5 points per game to go with 5.7 rebounds per contest. He ranks fifth in the CAA at 52.9 percent shooting.
 
The Huskies lead the all-time series with the Tribe at 10-9, but W&M holds a 7-1 advantage in Williamsburg. Eight of the 19 meetings between the teams have been decided by five or less points. Last season, W&M tallied a 78-62 win in Williamsburg, while NU posted a 74-65 triumph in Boston. Northeastern won the CAA title with a 72-61 victory in league championship game in Baltimore.
 
Hot Starts in CAA Play
After winning three straight when trailing at halftime to end the non-conference slate, the Tribe has jumped out to fast starts in CAA play. In the first half of its first three league contests, W&M is shooting a combined 58.3 percent (49-of-84) from the field and averaging 42.3 points per first half. The Green and Gold shot better than 60 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes to jump out to a 19-point halftime lead over Charleston on Jan. 2 and a 17-point advantage at Drexel on Jan. 7. W&M connected on 60.9 percent (17-of-28), including 7-of-13 from 3-point range, in the first half against the Cougars, before shooting 63 percent (17-of-27) and 5-of-10 from 3-point range in the opening period at Drexel.
 
CAA Play is Tarpey Time
In the Tribe's win at Drexel on Thursday, senior Terry Tarpey scored a season-high 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting. After scoring at a 9.6 per game clip in the non-conference, the Tribe senior bumped his scoring average to 11.3 in CAA play, including 15 per contest in the last two games. Tarpey's scoring followed the same tune a season ago. He scored 7.6 points per game in the non-conference slate, before pushing his averaged to 14.4 per contest in CAA action, which ranks ninth in the league. All four of Tarpey's career 20-point games have been in league play.
 
Improved Free Throw Shooting
The Tribe has seen a marked improvement in its free throw percentage since CAA play began. Over its three league games, W&M is connecting at an 80.4-percent (45-of-56) clip from the charity stripe, which ranks second the league. In fact, with its recent success, the Green and Gold is shooting 70.7 percent (203-of-287) from the free throw line on the year, which ranks third in the CAA overall. The Tribe has produced its top two free throw percentage games over the last three contests. W&M connected on a season-high 93.3 percent (14-of-15) against Towson, before shooting 86.7 percent (13-of-15) in a win at Drexel on Jan. 7. Free throw shooting has been a key to victory for W&M this season. The Green and Gold is 9-0 when making more free throws than its opponent and 6-1 when it shoots at least 70 percent from the charity stripe.
 
Thief in the Night
Twice in the last five games, senior Terry Tarpey equaled his career high recording six steals in a game. He pulled the trick in the Tribe's victory over High Point on Dec. 21 and at Drexel on Jan. 7. The six steals are the most for a CAA player against a Division I opponent this season and tied for the fourth-best single-game total in W&M history. Tarpey leads the CAA and ranks fourth nationally at 2.9 steals per game. According to the advanced statistical web site KenPom.com, he ranks fourth in the country with a steal percentage of 5.4. Steal percentage is the percentage of possessions that a player records a steal while he is on the court. With his six steals at Drexel, Tarpey moved into sixth place on the Tribe's career steals list with 147 and is one steal away from the top five.
 
Impact Transfer
Sophomore guard David Cohn, who joined the W&M program after spending his freshman campaign at Colorado State, is starting to hit his stride as the schedule turns to CAA play. Over the last three games, he is averaging 11.3 points and 4.3 assists per game, while shooting 55 percent from the floor (11-of-20) and 50 percent from 3-point range (4-of-8). He scored a career-high 16 points against Towson on 5-of-9 shooting, including a 2-of-4 effort from 3-point range. On the year, Cohn has started all 14 games at the point guard position and led W&M in assists in nine contests. He ranks as one of the top assist men the CAA, dishing out 3.8 per game, which ranks sixth in the league. Cohn has also protected the ball, sporting the CAA's second-best assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.7, which also ranks 65th nationally.

Elite Shooting
Over the last four year, W&M is one of the top shooting teams in the country. This season, the Tribe leads the CAA and is 41st in the country at 47.6 percent from the floor. Each of the three previous years, W&M ranked among the top 30 nationally, making it one of only three teams to accomplish the feat. The Green and Gold finished 14th in the country at 48.3 percent in 2015, 25th at 47.6 percent in 2014 and 30th at 46.7 percent in 2013. Along with the Tribe, both Belmont and Gonzaga have ranked among the top 30 nationally each of the last three years. In total, only nine teams (including Utah, Northern Colorado, Colgate, SMU, Murray State and Iowa) have ranked among the top 30 nationally in the previous two seasons. W&M shot better than 45 percent from the floor in three straight seasons for the first time in 23 years. W&M last accomplished the feat during the 1989-90 through the 1991-92 seasons. The Tribe's back-to-back seasons of better than 47 percent shooting in 2013-14 and 2014-15 mark the first time that has occurred since 1983-84 and 1984-85.
