Men's Basketball Travels to Drexel for Thursday Night Tip

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - After wrapping up a five-game homestand, the William & Mary men's basketball team treks to Philadelphia to take on the Drexel Dragons in the Tribe's first CAA road of the year on Thursday, Jan. 7. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. from the Daskalakis Athletic Center, and the game will be streamed online at CAA.TV.

Tribe fans can also catch the men's basketball action over the Tribe Radio Network with Jay Colley and former Tribe player John Leone on the call. The Tide 92.3 FM and 107.9 Bach FM are the flagship stations of the Tribe Radio Network and the audio is also available over the Web at TribeAthletics.com.

News and Notes
- Drexel leads the all-time series with W&M at 20-12, but the Tribe has won 10 of the last 17 meetings. Last season, the Dragons snapped a three-game Tribe win streak in the series with an 80-66 win in Williamsburg. W&M has won the last two games in Philadelphia.
 
- W&M shot a season-high 57.8 percent (26-of-45) in the win over Charleston on Jan. 2. The Green and Gold leads the CAA and ranks 54th nationally in field goal percentage at 47.2 percent. In league play, the Tribe is shooting 50.5 percent.
 
- As a team, the Tribe is averaging 5.6 blocked shots per game, which ranks 23rd nationally. W&M has four of the top 15 shot blockers in the CAA.
 
- Senior Terry Tarpey leads the CAA in both steals (2.7) and blocked shots (1.7) per game. He became the first player in W&M history with 100 career blocked shots and 100 career steals in the Tribe's win over Charleston. He ranks sixth nationally in steals per game and 91st in blocked shots.
 
- Sophomore David Cohn, who scored a career-high 16 points in the CAA opener with Towson, is averaging 12.5 points and 5.0 assists per game, while shooting 50 percent from the field and 3-point range. Cohn leads the CAA in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.9) and ranks sixth in assists per game (3.8).
 
- Last week, junior Omar Prewitt averaged 21 points and 8.3 rebounds per game in the Tribe's three contest. He ranks third in the CAA and 64th nationally in scoring at 18.2 points per game.
 
Scouting Drexel
Drexel enters the game with the Tribe at 2-11 on the season. The Dragons suffered setbacks in their first two CAA games both on the road at UNCW (75-63) and Elon (85-78).
 
As a team, Drexel ranks sixth in the league in defensive efficiency at 101.8. The Dragons have been dominant on the glass with the start of CAA play, leading the league in rebounds per game (44.0), rebounding margin (+10.0) and offensive rebounds per contest (19.5). Overall, DU is 59th nationally at 13.2 offensive rebounds per game. Against UNCW, DU pulled down 25 offensive rebounds. Drexel is 57th in the country at getting to the free throw line and in CAA play is shooting 77 percent from the charity stripe. The Dragons connected on 40 percent from 3-point range in their first two league games.
 
Senior Tavon Allen, who had 22 points in the Dragons' victory over W&M last season, leads the team at 15.1 points per game. He is shooting 39.2 percent from 3-point range. Freshman Terrell Allen and sophomore Rashann London both averaged in double figures as well for Drexel at 10.5 and 10.2 points per game. Allen leads the team at three assists per game, while ranking second in the league and 34th nationally at 2.1 steals per contest. Senior Kazembe Abif and junior Rodney Williams top the Dragons in rebounding at 7.4 and 6.7 per game, respectively.
 
Drexel leads the all-time series with W&M at 20-12, but the Tribe owns victories in 10 of the last 17 meetings. Last season, the Dragons snapped a three-game Tribe winning streak in the series, posting an 80-66 win in Williamsburg on the final day of the regular season. W&M has won the last two meetings between the teams in Philadelphia.
 
Tribe Rejections
For the second straight season, the Tribe ranks as one of the top shot blocking teams in the CAA and the country. As of Jan. 4, W&M leads the CAA and ranks 23rd nationally at 5.6 blocked shots per game. Last season, the Green and Gold was second in the league and 85th in the country at 4.2 per game. W&M's 137 blocked shots a season ago ranked third in W&M history, while its average was sixth. The Green and Gold have four of the top 15 shot blockers in the CAA led by senior Terry Tarpey, who tops the league at 1.7 blocks per game. Senior Sean Sheldon and junior Daniel Dixon both rank ninth in the league at 0.9 per game, while Prewitt is 13th at 0.8. Earlier this season, the Tribe posted the fourth-best single-game blocked shot total in program history and most in 20 years with 13 in a win over Hampton. The last time a Tribe team recorded more blocked shots was on Feb. 26, 1996 when W&M had 17 vs. George Mason. Against the Pirates, Dixon blocked five shots. More recently, Sheldon set a career-high with five blocked shots against Charleston.
 
Prewitt Toeing the Line
Junior Omar Prewitt is among the national leaders when it comes to getting to the free throw line. He ranks 43rd nationally in attempts and 47th in mad free throws, as of Jan. 4. According to the advanced statistical website KenPom.com, Prewitt is 93rd nationally in free throw rate (63.0), which measures a player's ability to get the line relative to how often he attempts to score. The 6-7 guard/forward is apt at drawing fouls as well, ranking 18th in the country according to the website in fouls draw per 40 minutes at 7.6. Overall this season, Prewitt averages 5.4 made free throws and 7.4 attempts per game. He has been even better over the last three games, connecting on 26-of-33 (78.8 percent) from the free throw line.
 
Tarpey 100/100
Senior Terry Tarpey is known as a stat-sheet stuffer and became the first player in W&M history with 100 career steals and 100 career blocked shots. He currently ranks fifth in W&M history in blocked shots (100) and eighth in steals (141). His career steals total ranks 38th nationally among active Division I players (as of Jan. 4). Last season, Tarpey led the CAA at 1.8 steals per game and his 58 swipes were the most in program history since steals became an official NCAA statistic in 1986. This season, he is averaging 2.7 steals per game, which leads the CAA and sixth nationally. Tarpey ranked second in the league at 1.3 blocked shots per game a season ago on the way to CAA Defensive Player of the Year honors. He currently leads the CAA and is 91st nationally at 1.7 blocks per game.
 
Impact Transfer
Sophomore guard David Cohn, who joined the W&M program after spending his freshman campaign at Colorado State, is starting to hit his stride as the schedule turns to CAA play. Over the last two games, he is averaging 12.5 points and five assists per game, while shooting 50 percent from the floor (8-of-16) and 3-point range (3-of-6). He scored a career-high 16 points against Towson on 5-of-9 shooting, including a 2-of-4 effort from 3-point range. On the year, Cohn has started all 13 games at the point guard position and led W&M in assists in eight contests. He ranks as one of the top assist men the CAA, dishing out 3.8 per game, which ranks sixth in the league. Cohn has also protected the ball, sporting a CAA-best assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.9, which also ranks 37th nationally.
 
Elite Shooting
Over the last four year, W&M is one of the top shooting teams in the country. This season, the Tribe leads the CAA and is 54th in the country at 47.2 percent from the floor. Each of the three previous years, W&M ranked among the top 30 nationally, making it one of only three teams to accomplish the feat. The Green and Gold finished 14th in the country at 48.3 percent in 2015, 25th at 47.6 percent in 2014 and 30th at 46.7 percent in 2013. Along with the Tribe, both Belmont and Gonzaga have ranked among the top 30 nationally each of the last three years. In total, only nine teams (including Utah, Northern Colorado, Colgate, SMU, Murray State and Iowa) have ranked among the top 30 nationally in the previous two seasons. W&M shot better than 45 percent from the floor in three straight seasons for the first time in 23 years. W&M last accomplished the feat during the 1989-90 through the 1991-92 seasons. The Tribe's back-to-back seasons of better than 47 percent shooting in 2013-14 and 2014-15 mark the first time that has occurred since 1983-84 and 1984-85.
