Men's Basketball Hosts James Madison for Sunday TV Tilt

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - After playing four of its last five games on the road, the William & Mary men's basketball team returns home to host Commonwealth rival James Madison on Sunday evening at Kaplan Arena. The game, which is slated for a 7 p.m. start time, will be televised regionally on Comcast SportsNet with Al Koken and Christy Winters Scott on the call.

Tribe fans can also catch the men's basketball action over the Tribe Radio Network with Jay Colley and Charlie Woollum on the call. The Tide 92.3 FM and 107.9 Bach FM are the flagship stations of the Tribe Radio Network and the audio is also available over the Web at TribeAthletics.com.

News and Notes
- James Madison leads the all-time series with W&M at 48-41, but the Tribe is 18-11 vs. the Dukes under head coach Tony Shaver. The Green and Gold is 23-16 in Williamsburg against their Commonwealth rivals, and have won the last four meetings between the teams. 
 
- Sunday's game pits the CAA's top shooting team against the league's best defense. W&M leads the CAA in field goal percentage (48.4) for the third time in the last four years and in 3-point percentage (38.4) for the fourth-straight season. On the other hand, JMU tops the league in field goal (39.8) and 3-point percentage (28.4) defense.
 
- W&M is 9-1 at home in 2015-16 and 21-3 over the last two seasons. JMU is one of four teams in the country that is undefeated in true road game this season at 7-0.
 
- The Tribe tied the school record for 3-pointers made (16) in its win over Delaware on Thursday. Over the last three games, W&M is averaging 12.7 3-pointers and shooting 44.2 percent (38-of-86) from long range.
 
- In four of the last six games, the Tribe has dished out 20 or more assists, including the second most in school history with 28 at Delaware. W&M ranks 27th nationally in assists per game at 16.8.
 
- Senior Terry Tarpey scored in double figures in seven straight games, averaging 14 points per game during the stretch. He is shooting 57.6 percent from the field and 87 percent at the free throw line in those seven games.
 
- Sophomore Connor Burchfield connected on 6-of-7 from 3-point range in two of the last three games. He leads the CAA at 62 percent from 3.
 
Scouting James Madison
James Madison enters the weekend at 16-6 overall and 6-3 in CAA play, sitting in a third-place tie with the Tribe. The Dukes had a five-game winning streak snapped by UNCW on Thursday, 78-73, in Harrisonburg. JMU is one of the top teams in the country on the road this season. In fact, James Madison is one of four teams nationally that are undefeated in true road games, sitting at 7-0. JMU owns CAA road wins over Hofstra, Northeastern, Delaware and Elon. The other three undefeated teams in true road games are Southern Illinois (8-0), St. Joseph's (6-0) and Providence (5-0).
 
The Dukes have made a name for themselves on the defensive end, ranking among the CAA leaders. JMU leads the league in both defensive field goal (39.8) and 3-point percentage defense (28.4). They have been even better in league play at 37.7 percent and 22.6 percent, respectively. Nationally, JMU is seventh in defensive 3-point percentage and 36th in field goal percentage defense. James Madison holds team to 67.7 points per game and possesses a defensive efficiency of 98.6, which ranks 76th nationally according to KenPom.com. They have been even better in league action topping the CAA at 95.9. Offensively, JMU ranks third in the league in field goal (45.4), 3-point (37.4) and free throw (69.6) percentage, while averaging 76 points per game. The Dukes are second in the CAA and 30th nationally at 9.1 3-pointers made per game. 
 
Senior guard Ron Curry, a preseason first team all-league pick, tops JMU at 16.1 points per game, which ranks seventh in the CAA. He has upped his scoring average in league play to 18.3 per game. Curry is seventh in the league at 3.8 assists per game, while shooting 38.5 percent from 3-point range. Junior Shakir Brown is second on the team at 12.2 points and 6.1 rebounds per contest. He ranks third in the CAA in 3-point shooting (42.5 percent) and seventh in free throw percentage (79.7). Junior Dimitrije Cabarkapa  is the other JMU player in double figures at 10.7 per contest off the bench. He is fourth in the league at 52.6 percent from the floor and seventh at 39.5 percent from 3. Junior Yohanny Dalembert leads the Dukes and ranks seventh in the CAA at 6.7 rebounds per game.
 
JMU leads the all-time series with W&M at 48-41, but the Green and Gold is 18-11 against the Dukes under head coach Tony Shaver. The Tribe also holds a 23-16 advantage in games played in Williamsburg. W&M has won the last four meetings between the two teams. Last season, the Tribe downed JMU, 81-73, in Williamsburg behind the first triple-double in program history from Terry Tarpey. The Green and Gold shot 60.4 percent in knocking off the Dukes in Harrisonburg, 84-65, as well.
 
Hitting 3-Pointers in Bunches
Twice in the last three games, the Tribe connected on a top-10 3-point effort in program history. The Green and Gold drilled 14 triples in a win over Elon on Jan. 21, which tied for the seventh-best single-game total in program history.  W&M followed that effort, equaling the school record of 16 3-pointers at Delaware on Jan. 28. It was the fifth time in Tribe history, and the third time under head coach Tony Shaver that W&M hit 16 3-pointers in a game. Over the last three contests, the Green and Gold is averaging 12.7 3-pointers made per game and shooting 44.2 percent (38-of-86) from distance. The Tribe's 3-pointers made per game average has increased from 7.6 in non-conference play to 9.1 in league action.
 
Give Me 20
Sporting the CAA's top offense, the Tribe has a number of players who can make an impact by providing a scoring punch. In fact, with David Cohn's career-high 23 points at Delaware, six different Tribe players have scored 20 or more points in a game this season. The six players with 20-point games are the most in the CAA. Five Hofstra players own 20-point contests, while Charleston, Delaware, JMU, Towson and UNCW have four players each. Junior Omar Prewitt leads the Tribe with seven 20-point games, which ranks fourth in the CAA. Junior Daniel Dixon has scored 20 or more points in three contests this season. Seniors Terry Tarpey and Sean Sheldon scored 21 and 20 points at Drexel and UNCW, respectively. Sophomore Connor Burchfield accomplished the feat in a win over Elon with 20 points on Jan. 21, while Cohn pulled the trick at Delaware.
 
Protecting the Leather
Over the last three years, W&M has been one of the top teams in the country at protecting the basketball, ranking among the top 75 nationally each season. During the 2015-16 campaign, the Tribe ranks 38th nationally in fewest turnovers per game at 11.2. W&M was 26th in 2013-14 (10.3) and 73rd in 2014-15 (11.5).  The Green and Gold turned the ball over just five times in its win at Delaware. It marked the second time this season that W&M turned it over on only five occasions in a game, which is the ninth-lowest single-game total in program history. This season, W&M is 12-3 when turning the ball over 12 or fewer times. Along with ranking among the national leaders in fewest turnovers, the Tribe has ranked among the top 40 in the country in assist-to-turnover ratio. The Green and Gold is currently 19th nationally in assist-to-turnover (1.5). W&M was 31st in the category in 2013-14 (1.35) and 40th in 2014-15 (1.28).
 
Improving Record
Over the last three seasons, the Tribe has improved its record each year through 20 games. The Green and Gold sits at 14-6 this season. At this point in 2014-15, W&M was 13-7, while being 12-8 in 2013-14. Each of those two seasons, the Tribe went on to win 20 games. W&M also recorded a win in its 21st game each of the last two years against James Madison. The Tribe's 14-6 start through 20 games is the best for the program since the 1949-50 team went 15-5. Since 1950, the Green and Gold started 14-6 on four occasions, including 1977-78, 1997-98 and 2009-10.

Top 3-Point Shooting Team
For the fourth straight season, the Tribe leads the CAA in 3-point shooting at 38.4 percent. In fact, the Green and Gold has ranked among the top 50 nationally in 3-point field goal percentage each of the last four years, including 36th this season. W&M is one of only four teams nationally, along with Duke, Drake and Northern Colorado, to ran among the top 50 in the country each of the last four years. The Tribe has upped its 3-point shooting since getting into conference play, connecting at a 40 percent clip in league action. Over the last eight contests, the Green and Gold is shooting 42.4 percent (75-of-177) from 3-point range.
 
CAA Play is Tarpey Time
Since entering CAA play, senior Terry Tarpey has increased his scoring production. It is a similar pattern that the Stamford, Conn., native followed during his junior season as well. After scoring at a 9.6 per game clip in the non-conference this season, the Tribe senior bumped his scoring average to 12.3 in CAA play, which ranks 20th in the league. In 2014-15, Tarpey averaged 7.6 points per game in the non-conference slate, before pushing his averaged to 14.4 per contest in CAA action, which was ninth in the league. In the Tribe's win at Drexel on Jan. 7, Tarpey scored a season-high 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting. All four of Tarpey's career 20-point games have been in league play.
 
Elite Shooting
Over the last four year, W&M is one of the top shooting teams in the country. This season, the Tribe leads the CAA and is 22nd in the country at 48.4 percent from the floor. It marks the fourth straight season in which W&M has ranked among the top 30 nationally, making it one of only three teams to accomplish the feat. The Green and Gold finished 14th in the country at 48.3 percent in 2015, 25th at 47.6 percent in 2014 and 30th at 46.7 percent in 2013. Along with the Tribe, both Belmont and Gonzaga have ranked among the top 30 nationally each of the last four years. With its 48.4 percent shooting this season, W&M has connected on 45 percent or better from the floor in four straight years for the fi­rst time since the 1981-82 and 1984-85. The Green and Gold has led the CAA in field goal percentage three of the last four seasons.
 
Impact Transfer
Sophomore guard David Cohn, who joined the W&M program after spending his freshman year at Colorado State, has hit his stride in CAA play. He is averaging 13.2 points and 5.3 assists per game, while shooting 56.3 percent overall (40-of-71) and 55.9 percent from 3-point range (19-of-34) in league action. Cohn ranks second in the CAA in 3-point percentage in conference games, while ranking fourth in field goal percentage. His scoring average is 15th in the league and his assist average is second in CAA play. He scored at least seven points in every league games, including six double-digit efforts. He has scored in double figures in five of the last six games, including his first career double-double with 14 points and 11 assists at UNCW. In W&M's win at Delaware on Jan. 28, Cohn scored a career-high 23 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including 5-of-9 from 3-point range.
 
20-Assist Games
In four of its last six games, the Tribe has dished out 20 assists, including its highest total since 1995. The Green and Gold tallied 21 assists in a win over Northeastern on Jan. 9, before recording 20 at UNCW on Jan. 16. After dishing out 27 assists, the sixth most in school history, against Elon on Jan. 21, the Tribe handed out 28 assists on its 31 made field goals in a win at Delaware on Jan. 28. The 28 assists were the second most in program lore and the highest total since tallying a school-record 33 in a 1995 victory over George Mason. The Tribe is 5-1 this season and 18-1 over the six seasons when dishing out 20 or more assists in a game.
 
Sharp-Shooter
Sophomore Connor Burchfield has made a name for himself as a long-range bomber. A key piece off the Tribe bench, the 6-4 guard is shooting a remarkable 62 percent (31-of-50) from 3-point range, which leads the CAA. He also sports an effective field goal percentage of 86.9 percent and a true shooting percentage of 87.7 percent, according to KenPom.com. Twice in the last three games, Burchfield connected on 6-of-7 from 3-point range in Tribe wins over Elon and at Delaware. He connected on all six of his 3-point attempts in the first half against the Blue Hens on Jan. 28, giving W&M a 42-38 halftime lead. He led the Tribe in scoring, erupting for 20 points in the win over Elon on Jan. 21. Earlier this season at Howard on Nov. 28, Burchfield tied W&M school records going a perfect 7-of-7 from the floor and 5-of-5 from 3-point range on the way to a career-high 19 points. He became the ninth Tribe player be at least a perfect 7-of-7 from the field and sixth to be perfect from 3-point range with at least four attempts. He owns five double-figure scoring games off the bench for the Green and Gold this season. Burchfield is averaging 6.2 points per game, while shooting 60.6 percent (43-of-71) from the field.
