CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Sophomore
Christian Cargill picked up his third career nationally-ranked win, but the William & Mary men's tennis team suffered a tough 4-3 setback at No. 32 Harvard on Saturday afternoon. Along with Cargill's win at the top singles slot, sophomore
Lars de Boer and junior
Aidan Talcott picked up three-set wins for the Green and Gold. The Tribe fell to 1-1 on the year, while Harvard, which knocked off Boston College later in the day, won its first of a season-opening doubledheader.
Cargill and sophomore
Alec Miller picked up their first win as a duo at the No. 3 position, downing the Crimson pair of Conor Haughey and Andy Zhou, 6-3. Harvard though responded with wins from its nationally-ranked doubles teams at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots to claim the initial point of the match.
After dropping the opening set, 6-1, at No. 1 singles, Cargill rallied to get W&M on the board. The Tribe sophomore won the second and third sets, 6-3, 6-4, to knock off No. 71-ranked Nicky Hu. It was Cargill's fourth win of the year and first of the dual-match campaign.
The Crimson posted wins at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles posts to clinch the team triumph. Harvard's Kenny Tao pulled out a close second set against junior
Addison Appleby to win at No. 3, and Andy Zhou outlasted Miller, 7-5, 7-5, at No. 4 to give the home side the team victory.
de Boer and Talcott won three-set matches at No. 5 and No. 6. The third sets in both matches were shortened with the team result decided after the tilts had already entered the final sets. de Boer upended Kelvin Lam, 6-3, 4-6, 4-1, for his third straight win. He improved to 6-5 overall on the year and 2-0 in dual-match action. Talcott recorded his first dual-match win as a member of the Tribe and fifth win overall this year, dispensing of Jean Thirouin, 6-3, 4-6, 4-2.
The Tribe wraps up its season-opening three-match Ivy League swing at Brown on Monday, Jan. 18. The contest carries a 10 a.m. start time.
