WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - William & Mary head coach
Jeff Kader announced the addition of
Ryan Newman to the Tribe program for the 2016 spring season. Newman, a 6-3, 204-pounder from Wilmington, N.C., transfers to W&M from N.C. State and will be immediately eligible to complete for the Green and Gold as a redshirt sophomore.
"Ryan will make an immediate impact on our team in both singles and doubles," Kader said. "He is a strong, attacking lefty with a very good lefty serve that brings great variety to our line-up. Additionally, he has played in the ACC, one of the strongest tennis conferences in the country. He has played against some of the best competition in the country and knows what it takes to be on a top team."
At N.C. State, Newman recorded a 6-2 mark in singles and 1-0 doubles mark as a freshman in 2013-14 and redshirted a season ago. He earned ACC Academic Honor Roll and Caterpillar Scholar Athlete accolades in both 2013-14 and 2014-15.
Newman was a four-star recruit out of Boca Prep International. He was ranked 98th nationally and No. 3 in the state of North Carolina according to Tennis Recruiting Network as a prep. He played in tennis tournaments around the world, including the Caribbean, United States, China, Vietnam, Australia and Span. He captured the SVG ITF Junior doubles title in August of 2011 with partner Adrian de Silva.
Newman intends to major in computer science at W&M. He enjoys fishing, playing golf and guitar.
He joins a group of six returning players from a team that captured the program's four CAA Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in for the 11th time. A trio of upperclassmen in senior
Scott Huang and juniors
Addison Appleby and
Damon Niquet return to the fold. W&M also welcomes back First Team All-CAA singles player and the reigning league rookie of the year in sophomore
Christian Cargill.
The Tribe opens the dual-match campaign with a trio of road matches against Ivy League competition. The Tribe travels to Yale on Friday, Jan. 15, at 11 a.m., before heading to Harvard on Saturday, Jan. 16, at 1 p.m. W&M wraps up the trip at Brown on Monday, Jan. 18, at 10 a.m.
