Box Score The William & Mary field hockey team made a season-best eight saves, but came up just shy of Richmond 2-0 on Friday night in Williamsburg. The Tribe moves to 4-5 on the year, while the Spiders improved to 5-4 overall.
Box ScoreThe Tribe kept a clean sheet in the first half despite a 9-2 shot deficit, turning the Spiders away four times. Sophomore
Booter Ellis (Laurel, Del.) made the first save of the night, her league-leading third defensive save of the year, and senior goalkeeper
Meredith Savage (Virginia Beach, Va.) had three more. Offensively, W&M had a pair of shots, one from captain
Peyton Smith (Richmond, Va.) that was blocked, and another that slid just wide by sophomore
Cammie Lloyd (Midlothian, Va.).
In the second, Richmond came back out on the attack, forcing Savage and freshman
Caroline Arrowood (Chesapeake, Va.) to make a pair of strong saves back-to-back in the 40th minute. Savage made another great play midway through the 43rd, checking the ball away from an attacker, but the Spiders broke through with a goal out of a scrum as the 43rd minute finished out. The Tribe had five more shots and three more penalty corners, as well as a penalty stroke, but couldn't break through while Richmond got a second in the 61st to set the final margin.
William & Mary is back in action on Sunday afternoon, hosting Davidson at 1 p.m. at Busch Field.
