Antonio Bustamante's Golden Goal Leads Men's Soccer to 3-2 Victory at Navy

Box Score

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – For the second straight match, the William & Mary men's soccer team won a game in double overtime with a 3-2 victory over Navy on Tuesday night in Annapolis, Maryland. This time, freshman Antonio Bustamante scored the game-winning goal in the 103rd minute. With the win, the Tribe improves 3-2-2, while Navy falls to 3-4-1 on the season.

"Once again, we are very happy to come out on the winning side of a very hard-fought game tonight," head men's soccer coach Chris Norris said. "I thought we played well in stretches, but also struggled with some of Navy's adjustments. Fortunatley, when we needed big plays, we were able to come up with them more often than not."

Senior Jackson Eskay finished the match with a four-point night, playing a hand in all three goals. The senior had an assist on the first goal, scored the second, and had the primary assist on the third. Freshman Ryder Bell scored W&M's first goal of the night in the 57th minute.

Navy had a good look at goal in the ninth minute. Off of a cross, Thomas Shiiba was open in front of the goal on a one-timer. His shot sailed way over the goal, however.

W&M just missed a goal in the 23rd minute. After a very nice build up, junior Reilly Maw sent a cross into the box that found, sophomore William Eskay. The sophomore's header was stopped by Jackson Morgan. Maw also had a shot of his own go just wide in the 34th minute. After stealing the ball, he sprinted past the Midshipmen defense, and fired a shot from just inside the 18 that rolled wide.

The Tribe struck first with a marker in the 57th minute, which opened a stretch of four goals in 10 minutes. Jackson Eskay sent a serve into the box that found Bell. Bell was able to bring the ball off his chest, and directed the ball into the goal. His fourth goal of the season, gave the Tribe a 1-0 advantage.

Navy wasted little time and found the equalizer just four minutes later. Off of a corner sent in by Sam Bascom, was able to find the head Derek Vogel. Vogel directed the ball to Daniel Kwon, who finished off of his shoulder. The marker knotted the score at 1-1.

W&M retook the lead on a nice individual effort from Jackson Eskay in the 64th minute.  The senior sprinted down the left side, and fired from a short angle inside of the box into the right corner of the goal. His first goal of the season gave the Tribe a 2-1 lead.

However, the Mids again wasted little time finding its second equalizer of the game. Daniel Zaremba created space down the middle of the field, and left a pass for Shiiba at the top of the 18. Shiiba launched his shot into the right corner of the goal, tying the match at 2-2.

Each team had a shot on-goal down the stretch, but both goalkeepers came up with the stops. Navy's Sam Bascom put a shot on target that was saved by Phillips, before Bustamante turned a shot on target that was stopped by Morgan.

The Mids had the only two shots in the first overtime period. Right of the gates, Zaremba fired a shot on frame that was stopped by Phillips. The final chance also came from Zaremba, but it sailed high.

W&M scored the game-winning goal in the 103rd minute. William Eskay found his older brother Jackson Eskay, who dribbled the ball to the end line, before sending an excellent feed to Bustamante. Wide open, Bustamante scored into the empty net, sending the Tribe home with a 3-2 victory.

Each team fired 10 shots on the night, but the Tribe held an 8-5 advantage in shots on-goal. Jackson Eskay fired a match-high four shots, while Bustamante recorded three shots. Phillips recorded three stops in goal for the Tribe.

Tonight's match was W&M's fourth overtime match in its just seven matches this season. The Tribe has posted a 2-0-2 record this season in overtime. Last year, the College played only four overtime games all season.

The Green and Gold concludes its season-long three-game road trip and opens Colonial Athletic Association play on Saturday, Sept. 26 when they travel to College of Charleston. W&M returns home for a match on Wednesday, Sept 30 against Elon. Both matches are set for 7 p.m.
