QUARTERBACKS
Although W&M has struggled to find consistency at quarterback during recent years, offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Kevin Rogers is confident that junior Steve Cluley will provide stability at the position for a second consecutive season. After becoming the program's first sophomore signal caller to start a season opener since 2006, Cluley went on to start all 12 games during the 2014 campaign. In addition to throwing just four interceptions, which included a stretch of 138 passing attempts without a pick, the Manasquan, N.J., native displayed a glimpse of his potential versus No. 5/4 Villanova on homecoming when he threw for a career-high 350 yards and three touchdowns. The impressive performance represented the 18th-best single-game passing yardage total in school history.
In addition to providing the Tribe with an experienced, game-tested quarterback, Cluley (6-3, 215) possesses excellent arm strength and is an accurate passer. Additionally, he has good mobility and can throw on the run, while he has demonstrated toughness, durability and poise under pressure. With continued development – both on and off the field – Cluley is poised for a breakout season in which he could challenge for postseason honors.
Providing depth behind Cluley will be a trio of returners who all possess talent but enter the fall without any game experience. Redshirt freshman Tommy McKee (6-2, 205) enters preseason camp as the backup after an impressive spring that enabled him to emerge into the No. 2 role. Honored as the 2014 Scout Team Offensive Player of the Year, McKee is a very bright, competitive signal caller who brings a mature approach to the field. Additionally, the Virginia Beach, Va., native is a good athlete with mobility and consistently works hard both on the field and in the film room. Evidence of his talents are found in his record-setting prep career at Cox High School (Virginia Beach) where he posted single-season (25) and career (43) records for touchdowns.
Another young quarterback who will look to push Cluley is sophomore Jhalil Mosley. Although the Keswick, Va., native has been limited by injury for much of his collegiate career, he is physically talented and possesses a gifted arm and a quick release. Mosley (6-1, 195) benefited from reps during the spring and showed flashes of his potential during his on-field debut during the spring game. One of the state's most accomplished prep signal callers in recent years, Mosley finished his career at Monticello High School (Charlottesville) with 6,012 total yards – the second most in school history – and 69 touchdowns (48 passing / 21 rushing).
Junior Frank Brown IV will provide a veteran presence at the position after being a member of the travel squad for much of last season. A native of Hampton, Va., Brown (6-2, 210) possesses good arm strength and can make all the necessary throws to be successful.
