WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Senior starting pitcher Jason Inghram turned in a complete game gem and tied the school record for career wins as the William & Mary baseball team picked up a 3-1 win over Northeastern on Friday night at Plumeri Park. With the win, the Tribe improves to 20-25, 10-12 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while the Huskies drop to 21-26, 11-8 in league action.
Inghram was dominant from the start as he allowed just two hits over the complete game. The only run he allowed was unearned in the first. He struck a season-high 13 batters, including fanning the side in the top half of the ninth. With the victory, Inghram ties the W&M school record with 25 career victories, which ties Whitt Farr's mark.
Offensively, Inghram's battery mate senior Devin White was the hero. He extended his hitting streak to 11 games, while going 3-for-4 with all three RBI. His classmate Willie Shaw also extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Sophomore Ryder Miconi also had a multi-hit game, while freshman Ryan Hall scored a pair of runs.
Northeastern opened the scoring with an unearned run in the top of the first inning. Michael Foster led off the inning by reaching third base on an error. After an out, Rob Fonseca grounded out to second, but it was enough to plate the run.
William & Mary answered right back with a run in the home half of the first. With one out, Hall doubled into left field sparking the rally. After an out, Devin White roped a doubled down the right field line, tying the score at 1-1.
The Tribe took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Freshman Zach Newell started the rally with a walk, moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by classmate Cullen Large. Hall followed with a walk, before Shaw singled, loading the bases. Devin White roped single down the right field line, giving the Tribe 3-1.
W&M and Northeastern continue their three-game series with game two tomorrow, Saturday, May 9 at 4 p.m. The series finale is set for Sunday, May 10 at 1 p.m. That game will also serve as Senior Day and the Tribe will honor its seniors with a pregame ceremony.
