Jason Inghram broke the school's win record as his classmate
Willie Shaw supplied the offense with six RBI in an 8-2 victory over George Washington in game one of a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon. With the win, the Tribe improves to 21-27, while the Colonials fall to 29-19.
Inghram turned in his second strong start in a row, as he picked up his 26th career win, passing the old school record set by Whit Farr with 25. In today's game, Inghram allowed no runs, on just three hits, and struck out five in his fourth victory of the season.
Offensively, Shaw provided the power by homering in the first and second inning, driving in six total runs. Freshman Ryan Hall had a three hit game, while Shaw, freshman Cullen Large, and senior Devin White had multi-hit games. Every W&M starter recorded a base hit in the game, while Shaw extended his hitting streak to 14 games.
William & Mary struck for three runs in the top of the first inning. Large led of the game with a single to right. The next batter, Hall blasted a homer over the left field wall. Shaw followed suit and homered over the right field wall, giving the Tribe a 3-0 lead.
The Tribe rally continued in the top of the second inning. With one out, freshman Zach Newell sparked a big inning with a single up the middle, moving to second on a stolen base. A walk to Large and a bunt single by Hall, loaded the bases with just one out. Shaw continued his strong start to the day has he hit his second homer of the game, a grand slam, giving W&M a 7-0 lead.
W&M tacked on a solo run in the top of the fourth inning. Large led off the frame with a double into the right center field gap, moving to third on a passed ball. After an out, Shaw grounded out, but it was enough for his sixth RBI of the game, giving the Tribe an 8-0 lead.
George Washington broke the shutout with two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Colin Gibbons-Fly led off the inning with an infield single, moving to second on a single from Kevin Mahala, before a Mark Osis singled, loading the bases. The Tribe traded a double play for the Colonials' first run, before Robbie Mertz singled, cutting the W&M advantage to 8-2.
Senior Bryson Kauhaahaa pitched the final two innings of the game for the Green and Gold. He allowed two runs on five hits in the appearance.
The two teams will play game two of the doubleheader at 7 p.m. tonight. Game three of the series is set for tomorrow, Friday, May 15. First pitch is set for noon.
