ARLINGTON, Va. – The William & Mary baseball team completed a doubleheader sweep of George Washington with a 2-1 win in the nightcap on Thursday evening in Arlington, Va. With the win, the Tribe takes the series and improves to 22-27, while the Colonials fall to 29-20.
Sophomore Daniel Powers made his first start of the year, but didn't factor in the decision. He pitched 5.1 innings allowing one run on five hits. Classmate John Yoest came in and fired 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit, before junior Joseph Gaouette pitched the final 1.1 of hitless baseball recording one strikeout, and picking up his second win of the year.
Offensively senior Willie Shaw extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a single in the first inning. Freshman Ryan Hall and sophomore Ryder Miconi were credited with Tribe's two RBI.
George Washington jumped on the board with a run in the first inning. Joey Bartosic led of the bottom of the inning with a double, moving to third on a fly ball. Bartosic came around to score on a groundout by Robbie Metz, giving the Colonials a 1-0 lead.
William & Mary responded with a run in the top of the third inning. Freshman Zach Newell reached on a one-out walk, moving to second on a walk to classmate Cullen Large. The next batter, Hall singled into right, tying the score 1-1.
The Tribe took advantage of an unearned run in the top of the eighth inning to take the lead for good. Large led off the inning with a walk, moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by Hall. After a walk to Shaw, George Washington made an error, which loaded the bases. After an out, Miconi drew a bases loaded walk, giving W&M a 2-1 lead.
W&M and George Washington conclude their three game series tomorrow, Friday, May 15 at noon.
