WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William and Mary baseball team plated two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to pickup an 11-9 victory over in-state rival Old Dominion on Tuesday night at Plumeri Park. With the victory, the Tribe improves to 15-17 on the season, while the Monarchs drop to 17-18.
Senior Devin White and junior Charley Gould led the Tribe in the victory each going 4-for-5 in the victory and both drove in two runs. Sophomore Tim Hoehn and freshman Cullen Large, both collected multi-hit games as well.
William and Mary jumped on the board with five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Large led off the inning with a walk, moving to third on a single from junior Ryan Hissey. The next batter, Gould doubled down the right field line, clearing the bases. After a walk to senior Willie Shaw, Hoehn doubled into left center field, clearing the bases. After an out and an infield single from Devin White, a wild pitch allowed for Hoehn to score. The outburst put the Tribe up 5-0.
Old Dominion got on the board with a run in the top of the third inning. With two outs, P.J. Higgins doubled off of the left field wall. The next batter, Zach Rutherford singled up the middle, scoring Higgins, cutting the deficit to 5-1.
The Monarchs continued their comeback and took their first lead with six runs in the top of the fourth inning. Josh Eldridge led off the inning with walk, moving to second on an error when Connor Myers reached. The next batter, Kurt Sinnen walked loading the bases. A bases loaded walk to Justin Hayes scored the first run of the inning. The next batter, Jason McMurray tripled clearing the bases and tying the score. With two outs, Rutherford singled up the middle. After Rutherford stole second, Taylor Ostrich singled into left giving the Monarchs a 7-5 lead.
W&M stormed back and retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Large led off the inning with a double down the right field line. After an out, Gould singled to left, but the ball was misplayed allowing Large to score. A double by Shaw put runners of second and third, before Hoehn singled tying the score at 7-7. Devin White, followed, with a bases clearing double to the left centerfield wall, reclaiming a 9-7 lead for the Tribe.
ODU cut the lead by one with a tally in the top of the seventh inning. Rutherford led off the frame with a double into left field, moving to second on a groundout. Josh Eldridge followed with a single to right brining around Rutherford.
The Monarchs tied the score with a run in the top of the eighth inning. Justin Hayes led off the inning reaching second on an error, before moving to third on a fly out. Nick Walker brought around Hayes with a single to right, tying the score 9-9.
W&M retook the lead, plating a pair of runs in the home half of the eighth inning. With one out, Devin White singled starting the rally. The next batter, freshman Ryan Hall doubled down the left field line scoring Devin White all the way from first. Sophomore Ryder Miconi followed with a single into center field, scoring Hall.
Freshman Robert White made the start going three innings, allowing six runs on three hits. Sophomore Daniel Powers got the Green and Gold through the middle innings, allowing just an earned run on five hits. Senior Bryson Kauhaahaa was credited with his third win of the year. He tossed 1.2 innings allowing one unearned run on one hit, and had two strikeouts. Junior Joseph Gaouette struck out the side in the ninth inning to nail down his second save of the season.
The Green and Gold concludes its mid-week schedule for the week as it travels to Virginia tomorrow, Wednesday, April 15. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. W&M returns home on Friday, April 17 as it opens a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series against James Madison. First pitch of the series lid-lifter is set for 7 p.m.
