Tribe Women's T&F Heads to Boston for ECAC Championship

The William and Mary women's track and field team heads up to the Boston this weekend for the ECAC Championships, beginning on Saturday afternoon at Boston University's Track and Tennis Center.  The Tribe has prelims of the mile, 800m, and 4x800m on Saturday, as well as the finals of the pole vault and the 5,000m; before the finals of the DMR, 4x800m, mile, 800m, and 3,000m on Sunday.

The Tribe is looking to veteran leadership to carry it into the top-10 at the Eastern Championships this weekend, with nine upperclassmen among its 13 athletes and seven returning All-East performers.  One of those proven competitors is redshirt-junior Carolyn Hennessey (Herndon, Va.), who is the top seed in the 5,000m on Saturday and is also entered in Sunday's 3,000m.  Hennessey ran 16:11.33 at the Spire Institute last month to earn her seed, and is looking to improve on her fifth-place finish from last year's ECAC Championships.  She's also poised to maybe take a shot at the school record in the 3,000m, a race that she was hoping to run an NCAA qualifier in last week before weather cancelled the last chance meet.

Also in those distance events is senior Dylan Hassett (Alpharetta, Ga.), who like Hennessey is entered in both the 3,000m and the 5,000m.  Two years ago, she earned All-East honors in both events, and last year, went outdoors to win the ECAC title in the 10,000m.  Junior Meghan McGovern (North Wales, Pa.) will join her teammates in the 5,000m, where she was fourth at the 2014 outdoor ECAC Championships.  The 5,000m is a bit of a speciality for McGovern, who has won the last two CAA titles outdoors and qualified for the NCAA outdoor championships each of her first two years in the event.  Freshmen Molly Breidenbaugh (Mechanicsville, Va.) and Regan Rome (Dallas, Pa.) will both run in the 3,000m on Sunday, after strong falls as part of the Tribe's nationally-ranked cross country team.  Rome was the CAA Rookie of the Year, and represented Team USA at the Great Edinburgh XC Challenge in January.

The Tribe also has the top seed in its one field event this weekend.  Senior Lizzie Powell (Richmond, Va.) has been having the season of her life this winter, finally able to put together a consistent campaign after dealing with injuries and transfers in her first four years.  So far this winter, Powell has reset the school record in the pole vault twice so far, up to a height of 4.17m (13-8.25) at Liberty on Valentine's Day weekend.  Like Hennessey, she was aiming for an NCAA qualifier last weekend before snow and ice interrupted.

In the individual prelims on Saturday, W&M has another pair of upperclass leaders.  Junior Claire Tito (Richmond, Va.) was fourth in the 500m here last winter, and steps up in distance this weekend to compete in the 800m.  She's run 2:14 this winter at Penn State, and has multiple 2:11 performances to her credit outdoors.  Senior Heather Clagett (Norfolk, Va.) is making her first individual appearance at ECACs, after running on several Tribe relays over the last three years.  Clagett ran 4:59.01 in the mile at Virginia Tech, and will be looking to lower that into the low-to-mid 4:50s to advance.

The relay pool will feed both the 4x800m, which has prelims on Saturday night, and the distance medley relay, which is a straight final on Sunday morning.  The eligible athletes include Tito, Clagett, and McGovern, as well as Ashley Woodards (Franklinville, N.J.), Maggie Gutierrez (Purcellville, Va.), Felicia Hammer (Monroe, N.H.), Kate Vannoy (Reston, Va.), and rookie Steph Urbancik (Downers Grove, Ill.).  Woodards was All-East on the DMR last year, while Gutierrez earned honors in both 2012 and 2013, one on each relay.  The Tribe qualified for the 4x800m with a strong 9:15 effort at Virginia Tech, but will need to go sub-9 or very close to advance to finals this weekend.  W&M also has a strong tradition in the DMR, finishing second each of the past two years, and would love to break through to win its first-ever ECAC relay this weekend.
