WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William and Mary men's tennis team travels to the West Coast to kick off Spring Break week at the College. The Green and Gold will take part in the 126th Pacific Coast Doubles Championship, March 5-8, before facing two nationally-ranked teams in dual-match competition. W&M faces No. 43 Pepperdine on Thursday, March 5, at 10 a.m. PT in San Diego, before taking on No. 60 San Diego State on Wednesday, March 11, at 2 p.m. PT.

Scouting the Tribe
W&M closed out its seven-match homestand by winning its first Colonial Athletic Association tilt of the season, 6-1, over James Madison on Feb. 28. The Green and Gold sits at 11-7 overall following its 5-2 homestand. Against JMU, the Tribe claimed a close doubles point thanks to a tiebreaker win at No. 2 from the sophomore pair of Damon Niquet and Addison Appleby. In singles, W&M claimed five of the six matches in straight sets to knock off the Dukes. Senior Will Juggins garnered CAA Player of the Week honors after posting a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 against Sebastian Salinas. It marked his third win at No. 1 and his 12th overall this season. Niquet posted a win at No. 3 singles followed by junior Scott Huang (No. 4), senior Aaron Chaffee (No. 5) and freshman Alec Miller (No. 6). Chaffee remained perfect in dual-match play at 7-0, while Miller won his seventh straight to improve to 13-6.

The Tribe will be taking part in the event for the third time in the last four years and will have four teams competing.

The field at the event includes players from 19 colleges and universities from across the country as well as teaching professionals, junior players, college coaches and former tour players among the independent players competing in the draw, which features 119 teams. Along with the Tribe, players from the following schools will be competing at the event: Boston College, California, Claremont McKenna-Mudd-Scripps (CMS), Georgetown, Michigan, Oklahoma State, Pepperdine, Rice, San Diego State, St. John's, Stanford, UC-Davis, UCLA, UC San Diego, UNLV, USC, San Diego, and Villanova.

Scouting #43 Pepperdine
Despite having its five-match win streak snapped at the hands of No. 26 Tulsa on March 1, Pepperdine moved up to No. 43 in the ITA national rankings released on Tuesday. The Wave sits at 6-4 on the year with three of its four setbacks coming to teams inside the national top 26. Pepperdine suffered setbacks to No. 16 UCLA and No. 17 South Florida along with its loss to the Golden Hurricane. The Wave owns wins over Boise State, Miami (Fla.), UC Irvine, Loyola Marymount and Oregon. Amazingly all six of Pepperdine's wins this season has been by either 4-3 or 4-2 score lines. Stefan Menichella and Guilherme Hadlich have split time at the No. 1 singles spot for Pepperdine with each winning a pair of matches. Rakshay Thakkar leads the Wave with 11 singles wins on the year. Hadlich and Rakshay are 3-1 at No. 1 doubles for Pepperdine.

Series History: W&M vs. Pepperdine
The Tribe and Wave have met on three occasions with Pepperdine winning all three. The teams were scheduled to meet last season with W&M in California for the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship, but the match was cancelled due to rain. The last time the teams met was in 2009 when the No. 14 Wave downed the Tribe, 5-2. In each of the three previous meetings, Pepperdine has been ranked in the national top 20.

Scouting #60 San Diego State
San Diego State is 6-4 on the year following a pair of nationally-ranked wins in its last two contests. On Feb. 20, the Aztecs upset No. 21 South Carolina, 7-0, before disposing of No. 75 Rice, 6-1, on March 3. Two of the four San Diego State losses have come to nationally-ranked foes in No. 10 UCLA and No. 48 Pepperdine. Earlier this week, SDSU's Thorsten Bertsch was named the Mountain West player of the week after posting a win at No. 2 singles in the victory over Rice. Bertsch is 9-4 on the year, including a 6-2 mark in dual-match play at the top two singles posts. Marko Goles-Babic leads SDSU with a 13-3 singles mark and an impressive 8-1 record in dual competition. Freddy Gelbrich is 4-1 at No. 1 for the Aztecs and owns an 8-4 overall mark. Gelbrich and Hendrik Jebens comprise San Diego State's top doubles teams, which is 8-1 at No. 1. Like the Tribe, the Aztecs will compete in the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship and also have a trio of dual-matches before facing W&M on Wednesday. SDSU hosts No. 22 California on Thursday, No. 65 Boise State on Sunday and St. John's on Tuesday before facing the Green and Gold.

Series History: W&M vs. San Diego State
San Diego State holds a 2-1 advantage in the series with the Tribe, including a narrow 4-3 win in 2012. Two of the three meetings have been in San Diego. W&M upset No. 33-ranked SDSU, 7-0, in 2004. The other tilt between the teams came as part of the Blue Gray Classic in 2005, which was a 4-0 Aztec victory.

Up Next
Following its trip to the Golden State, the Tribe returns home to play four of its final five matches of the 2015 regular season at home. The Green and Gold is back in action on Wednesday, March 18, when it hosts former CAA counterpart George Mason at the Millie West Tennis Facility.
