Marcus Thornton Named Associated Press All-American

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - William and Mary men's basketball senior Marcus Thornton further cemented himself as one of the greatest players to don the Green and Gold, earning Associated Press All-America honorable mention honors. Thornton is just the sixth All-American in W&M men's basketball history and first since 1981.

Thornton raked in numerous accolades during his senior campaign further distinguishing himself among the Tribe all-time best. He concluded his career as the program's all-time leading scorer and became the first Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Player of the Year in Tribe history. He topped the oldest Division I school record in college basketball when he surpassed the late Chet Giermak, who held the record since in graduation in 1950, on Feb. 25. Thornton finished with 2,178 points, which also ranks seventh in CAA history. His 325 career 3-pointers are the Tribe program mark and the fourth most in CAA history.

Last week, the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) selected Thornton as a First Team All-District 10 pick for the third time in his career. He was also named one of 16 national finalists for the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year award presented by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Thornton was picked to the Lou Henson Mid-Major All-America Team and is a finalist for the award's Mid-Major Player of the Year.

A First Team All-CAA honoree for the second straight season, Thornton became the first Tribe player since 2004 to average 20 points per game, ranking 16th nationally. His 659 points in 2014-15 were the second most in W&M history and the most since 1949. He knocked down a school-record 102 3-pointers and became just the sixth player in CAA history to reach the century mark in 3-pointers made. He closed out his career with 39 straight double-digit scoring games and scored in double figures in 110 of his 127 career games (86.6 percent). Thornton tallied 20 or more points in 14 games this season, including a career-high 37 at Richmond in December and a CAA Tournament record 37 in the semifinals against Hofstra in March. He ranked 13th nationally in 3-pointers made, 36th in 3-point percentage (40.2) and 75th in free throw percentage (83.0).

Thornton led the Tribe to back-to-back 20-win seasons in the final two years of his career, a first at W&M since 1951. He also captained W&M to back-to-back CAA Championship Game appearances in 2014 and 2015. The Tribe won the program's first CAA regular season title in 17 years, was the No. 1 seed in the CAA Tournament for the first time in program history and played in the National Invitation Tournament for the third time during Thornton's senior campaign.

The AP first team was Wisconsin's Frank Kaminsky, Duke's Jahill Okafor, Notre Dame's Jerian Grant, Kentucky's Willie Cauley-Stein and Ohio State's D'Angelo Russell. The AP second team included Utah's Delon Wright, Kentucky's Karl-Anthony Towns, Northern Iowa's Seth Tuttle, Arkansas' Bobby Porits and Virginia's Malcolm Brodgon. The AP third team comprised Oklahoma's Buddy Hield, Gonzaga's Kyle Wiltjer, Syracuse's Rakeem Christmas, Iowa State's Georges Niang and Gonzaga's Kevin Pangos.
