Men's Tennis Drops Close Match to Campbell, 4-3

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William and Mary men's tennis team suffered a 4-3 setback to Campbell on Wednesday afternoon at the Millie West Tennis Facility. The Tribe led 3-1 following singles wins from freshmen Christian Cargill and Lars de Boer, but the Camels rallied to win the final three singles matches, including the last two in three sets. W&M fell to 12-10 overall, while Campbell improved to 9-7.

W&M used a pair of doubles teams playing together for the second straight match to secure the initial point of the contest. Campbell had won the doubles point in seven straight matches, before dropping it to the Tribe. The duo of sophomore Addison Appleby and de Boer posted their second triumph in as many matches this time moving up to the top spot. The Tribe tandem downed the Campbell pair of Adrien Rissignon and Marthinus Visser, 6-4. The Camel duo entered the match at 5-1 on the year.

Freshman Christian Cargill and junior Scott Huang posted a 6-3 victory at No. 3 over Steven Billington and Nicolas Raktin. The win was the pair's second straight win. The triumph was also the 25th doubles win of the year for Cargill, which ranks fourth all-time among Tribe freshmen and is the most since Sebastien Vidal had 28 in 2007-08.

de Boer returned to the Tribe singles lineup for the first time since Feb. 15 and posted a convincing win at the No. 5 post. The Green and Gold rookie made quick work of Rissignon, 6-1, 6-1, to increase the W&M lead to 2-0. It was his fourth straight win, and he increased his season mark to 16-10, including an 11-3 ledger in dual-match competition.

After Campbell recorded its first point with a win at No. 2, Cargill answered with a straight-sets win at No. 1 for the Green and Gold. The Tribe freshman bounced Steven Bullington, 6-3, 6-2, for his team-leading 17th win overall. Cargill has won two straight and owns nine wins at the top singles spot.

Campbell gained the momentum with a victory at No. 4 in a pair of tiebreakers, while also forcing a third set at No. 3 after dropping the opening set. The Camel's Lukas Schaefer rallied past Appleby in three sets at the third singles slot, 1-6, 7-5, 6-3, to knot the contest at three.

Visser clinched the win for Campbell with a three-set victory at No. 6 over the Tribe's Alec Miller. The Camel senior outlasted his rookie counterpart in a first-set tiebreaker, 7-6 (8), but Miller bounced back to take the second set, 6-1. Visser jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the third on his way to the 6-2 triumph.

The Tribe returns to action when it travels to No. 8 Virginia on Saturday, April 4. The match carries at 1 p.m. start time in Charlottesville.
