KENNESAW, Ga. – The William and Mary baseball team dropped the series opener 3-2 at Kennesaw State on Friday night. With the decision, the Tribe falls to 10-7 overall, while the Owls improve to 10-10.
Due to excpeted weather conditions in the Georgia area on Sunday, the two teams will now play a doubleheader tomorrow, Saturday, March 22 at 2 p.m.
Sophomore Ryder Miconi provided the Tribe's offensive spark with his second home run of the season. He drove in the Tribe's two runs with the blast in the top of the seventh inning.
Kennesaw State scored first with a two-out rally in the bottom of the third inning. Corey Greeson started the rally with a two-out double down the left field line. After Kal Simmons was hit by a pitch, Chris Erwin singled to right field, plating Greeson, giving the Owls a 1-0 lead.
The Owls added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning, taking advantage of a Tribe miscue. Simmons, who reached on a two-out fielder's choice, stole second, but the throw was overthrown, allowing Simmons to score.
W&M tied the score with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning. Senior Willie Shaw led off the inning with a walk. After an out, Miconi blasted a two-run homer over the right field wall. His second long ball of the season, tied the score 2-2.
Kennesaw State came right back with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Williams started the rally with a one-out single, moving to third on a double to right center by Greeson. After an intentional walk, Erwin hit a fly ball to center, but it was deep enough to score Williams, giving the Owls a 3-2 lead.
The Tribe was able to get the tying run aboard in the top of the ninth inning on a Shaw single. However, Will Lowman was able to nail down the save for the Owls.
Senior Jason Inghram was saddled with his third loss of the season, but recorded his fourth quality start of the season. He tossed seven innings allowing three runs, just two earned, and six hits. He picked up five strikeouts in the game. Classmate Bryson Kauhaahaa pitched the eighth inning for the Green and Gold, striking out the side.
The College and Owls conclude their three-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow, Saturday, March 21. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
