Tribe Lacrosse Utilizes Balanced Attack in 20-9 Win at Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. (March 11, 2015)—The William and Mary lacrosse team cruised to a lopsided 20-9 victory at Longwood on Wednesday afternoon.

Although the contest was tied, 6-6, late in the first half, the Tribe (1-4) utilized a 13-2 run and allowed just three goals during the final 36:19 en route to earning the win.

Ten different players contributed to W&M's impressive goal total, which marked the most scored by the Tribe since earning a 21-3 win at Stetson on March 2, 2013.

Sophomore Shannon Quinn led the College with five points on four goals and an assist, while senior Amanda Johnson (3g, 1a) and freshman Abby Corkum (4a) added four points apiece.

In addition to the balanced scoring, W&M held a 24-7 advantage in draw controls, marking the program's highest total dating back through at least the 1987 season. Senior Ellen Shaffrey (six) and junior Zoe Boger (five) led the effort as the duo combined to total 11 draw controls.

While Longwood (1-5) got on the scoreboard first less than two minutes into the contest, W&M charged ahead with four unanswered goals. Four different players provided the scores, as Johnson (27:27), freshman McKinley Wade (26:45), Quinn (24:24) and freshman Danielle Palmucci (21:01) all found the back of the cage during the impressive stretch.

Although LU rallied back to tie the game a 6-6 following a score by Madison Stair with 6:20 showing, the College closed out the first half with a momentum-building 3-0 run. Boger (5:30), Shaffrey (4:12) and Johnson (0:27) all contributed goals during the stretch.

Three of Quinn's four goals came during the opening 30 minutes, while the Tribe owned a 12-4 advantage in draw controls at the break.

W&M dominated the entire second half and outscored the Lancers, 11-3, following the intermission. Nine different Tribe players found the back of the cage during the final stanza.

Longwood was led by Katie McHugh, who totaled a game-high six points (5g, 1a).

The Tribe will return to action when it plays at Old Dominion on Sunday at 1 p.m.
