Marcus Thornton Surpasses 2,000-Point Mark, But Men's Basketball Falls at Northeastern

BOSTON, Mass. - On the night senior guard Marcus Thornton reached the 2,000-point mark and moved into second place on the school's career scoring list, the William and Mary men's basketball team suffered a 75-64 loss at Northeastern. Thornton reached the 2K mark less than three minutes into the contest, but the Huskies hit eight of their first nine shots in surging to a lead and shot 59.1 percent to outdistance the Green and Gold. The Tribe fell to 16-10 overall and 10-5 in CAA play, while Northeastern improved to 18-10 on the year and 10-5 in league action.

Thornton and junior Terry Tarpey led the Green and Gold with 17 points apiece. Thornton became the third player in W&M history to score 2,000 career points as he connected on 6-of-12 from the field and 4-of-8 from 3-point range, while adding five assists. He moved past Jeff Cohen into second on the Tribe's career scoring list and also jumped to 11th in CAA history with 2,016 points. He is only 37 points away from the oldest Division I scoring record in the country of 2,052 held by Chet Giermak, who graduated in 1950. Thornton also registered his 300th career made 3-pointer.

Tarpey was 5-of-8 from the field, a perfect 2-of-2 from 3-point range and 5-of-6 at the free throw line. He topped the Tribe with five rebounds and added three assists, three steals and two blocked shots. Sophomore Omar Prewitt finish 12 points on the night, while freshman Greg Malinowski hit a trio of 3-pointers to chip in nine points.

Northeastern hit its first five shots and eight of its first nine in jumping out to a 12-point lead nine minutes into the contest. The Huskies hit three straight 3-pointers in the opening 2:12, including two from David Walker, forcing a W&M timeout. Thornton's 3-pointer to move past the 2,000-point mark at the 17:15 mark drew W&M within six, but the NU barrage continued. Quincy Ford hit two more Husky 3-pointers, before a Zach Stahl lay-up at the 11:07 mark gave the home team a 21-9 advantage.

Tarpey scored five straight points to draw W&M back within seven. He hit a 3-pointer from the left side, and then scored on a fast-break lay-up following a Prewitt steal to cut he margin to 23-16 with 8:20 remaining in the opening half. 

A Scott Eatherton lay-up and a Stahl conventional 3-point play pushed the NU lead to its largest of the first 20 minutes at 13, 34-21. Tom Schalk's move in the post with 57 seconds remaining in the first half closed the gap to eight, but the Huskies took a 37-28 lead to the intermission thanks to 63.6 percent (14-of-22) shooting, including 7-of-11 from 3-point range.

W&M drew within seven points on Prewitt's lay-up less than a minute into the second half. The Tribe had two chances to get closer, but came up empty on both occasions. The margin was still just seven, 43-36, just over five minutes into the second half on a Tarpey 3-pointer.

The Huskies put together an 8-1 run to push the lead back into double digits. Walker found Stahl for a lay-up at the 10:50 mark to extend the margin to 51-37 and force a W&M timeout. The advantage ballooned to as much as 19, 63-44, on a Walker 3-pointer at the 7:06 mark, and the Tribe could get no closer than the final margin of 11, 75-64.

W&M shot 53.7 percent (22-of-41) from the field, marking the 14th time this season and ninth in the Tribe's 15 CAA games that they shot 50 percent or better from the field. The Tribe was 12-of-22 (54.5 percent) from 3-point range, which was the 12th time the Green and Gold hit double-digit 3-pointers in a game this season.

Northeastern finished the contest at 59.1 percent (26-of-44) from the field, 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from 3-point range and 14-of-18 (77.6 percent) from the charity stripe. The Huskies dished out 20 assists on its 26 made field goals and controlled the glass at 24-15.

The Tribe will play its final road game of the regular season when it travels to Hofstra on Sunday, Feb. 22. The contest is slated for a 4:30 p.m. tip and will be televised nationally on the NBC Sports Network. Tribe fans can listen to the broadcast on the Tribe Radio Network with Jay Colley on the call.
