WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Four matches, two days, four wins. The William and Mary men's team wrapped up a whirlwind two-day stretch with a doubleheader sweep of instate foes Hampton and Longwood on Sunday at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. After not dropping a match in a doubleheader sweep of Binghamton and Villanova on Saturday, the Tribe did the same in 7-0 wins over both the Pirates and Lancers on Sunday. The Tribe ran its season mark to 10-5 with the four dual-match wins over the weekend.
On Sunday, the Tribe was 4-0 in doubles and 12-0 in singles competition to bring its weekend total to 9-0 in doubles and 22-0 in singles over the four matches. Senior
Aaron Chaffee, sophomore
Addison Appleby and freshmen
Lars de Boer and
Alec Miller were a perfect 2-0 in singles on Sunday, while Appleby and freshman
Christian Cargill combined to post doubles wins in both contests on the day.
de Boer and junior
Scott Huang started the day off on a positive note with a dominating 6-0 win over Hampton's Joshua McQueen and Lakshmana Satchithananthan at the No. 3 doubles spot. The win upped the duo's mark to 3-0 on the weekend. Appleby and Cargill clinched the initial point of the opening match with a 6-3 triumph over Peter Odeghami and Fedor Shirin at No. 2.
Rookies Miller and Cargill quickly pushed the Tribe lead 3-0 against the Pirates with easy singles wins. Miller dropped just two games in downing McQueen, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 4, before Cargill rolled to his eighth win at the top singles post. He improved to 15-11 overall with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Luke Thompson.
Chaffee continued his perfect dual-match campaign with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Shirin at No. 5 to clinch the win over Hampton. Appleby and de Boer tallied wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. After claiming the first set in tiebreaker, 7-6 (1), Appleby bounced Miguel Suarez in the second, 6-2. At No. 3, de Boer upended Odeghami, 6-4, 6-2.
Freshman
Luqman Ebrahim needed three sets, but rounded out the Tribe sweep with a come-from-behind win at No. 6. Satchithananthan won the opening set, 6-3, before Ebrahim claimed the second, 7-5. With the team result already decided, Ebrahim jumped out to an early lead in the third-set super breaker and road it to a 10-4 win. He improved to 2-0 in dual-match competition.
In the nightcap against Longwood, the Tribe took an early 1-0 lead with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions. Appleby and Cargill downed Daniel Elston and Steed Johnson, 6-1, at No. 1 for their third win of the weekend. Pairing together for just the second time, Chaffee and Ebrahim downed Bharani Sankar and Rosen Ilchev, 6-4, to clinch the doubles point.
The Tribe wasted little time picking up its 10th win of the year with singles wins at the bottom three positions. Huang dropped just a game in each set at No. 4 on his way to his fourth straight win over Lachlan Manser. He improved to 9-2 in dual-match play, 4-0 at No. 4 and 13-5 overall.
Like they did earlier in the day, Chaffee and Miller posted singles wins. Chaffee upped his ledger to 6-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Sankar at No. 6. Miller won his fourth straight match, upending Ilchev, 6-1, 6-2, at the fifth singles slot. He improved to 10-6 overall, including a 7-4 record in dual-match action.
Appleby also ran his win streak to four with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Alfonso Castellano at No. 2, while de Boer won by a matching score at No. 3 over Johnson. Appleby pushed his mark to 12-9 overall and 8-4 in dual-match play. de Boer posted his 15th singles win of the year and now leads the Tribe at 10-3 in dual-match competition, including a 5-1 mark at No. 3.
Senior
Will Juggins closed out the day with his third straight win. He defeated Florian Uffer, 6-4, 6-1, for his 10th win on the season and second at the No. 1 position.
The Tribe continues its 10-match homestand with three tilts next week. The Green and Gold hosts Charlotte on Thursday, Feb. 19, at 6 p.m., before welcoming Yale and UMBC to Williamsburg for a Saturday, Feb. 21, doubleheader. W&M faces the Bulldogs at 9 a.m., and the Retrievers at 6 p.m. All three matches will be played at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
